My dog has a fungal ear infection. Are scabs and fur loss normal?

Mometamax is for the ears. If your do has an allergic dermatitis then he may need an oral antibiotic, anti-histamine, corticosteroid, and/or other medications to help clear up the skin issue. You could also bathe him with a medicated dog shampoo and see if that helps his skin.

Lemuiex is adorable! The crusting and scaling on his ear margins could be due to vasculitis or a fungal infection, among others. Scabies does not typically cause this type of lesion on the ear margins, but the only way to determine that is through skin scraping. Vasculitis can be caused by a wide variety of issues, including infection, immune system disorders, drug/vaccine reactions, burns, cancer, among others. Until you take Lemuiex to the vet, you can try applying topical antibacterial/antifungal ointments to this area, but prescription medication is most likely necessary for this type of issue. I would recommend doing testing on the ears to find out what is causing the scabs. If your pet is outside a lot, then flea bites are possible and it is recommended to purchase flea bite repellent at your local pet store to start, followed by topical triple antibiotic to get the scabs to heal. If your pet is kept mostly indoors, two common causes of this are demodexx mites or a yeast infection. Also another condition called ear margin vasculitis could be the cause. Ear margin vasculitis is a spontaneous condition where the vessels at the ear tip margin become inflamed creating a scabby appearance to the skin. Since all 3 of these look very similar it is important to get testing done in the form of a skin scrape/cytology and/or skin biopsy because each is treated so differently and it takes out a lot of the guess-work. Therefore scheduling an appointment with your vet is needed for proper diagnosis and treatment.

This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria or fungal). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics or antifungal meds (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. This could be a sign of an ear infection in Max. Ear infections typically result from yeast or bacteria in dogs and can be itchy and painful. I'd recommend having Max examined by a veterinarian so his ears can be checked out.
