My dog won't eat dry food. Are food toppers a substitute for wet food?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered

My dog is not the biggest fan of dry food, so i try to mix it with food topper, but he ends up only eating the food topper and later he’ll eat the dry food. The one I buy is from pedigree, and the recommended amount is 300g of this + 75g of dry food but isn’t it better to feed him wet food (that usually already comes in 300g) and the 75g of dry food? Are these food toppers a substitute to regular wet food?

Hello. The food toppers are not considered complete foods & they are not nutritionally balanced. If he is eating the recommended amount of dry food for his age & weight, then you can continue with the food topper, but if not & you want to increase his nutritional intake of a balanced diet, then it is best to mix a good canned or wet food in with his dry instead of using the topper. Personally, I feel that if the topper is not nutritionally balanced, then you are feeding empty calories & the only ones who benefit from these products are the manufacturers.
