My dog won't eat dry food. Are food toppers a substitute for wet food?

Is this new that he won't eat his kibble? If so then I recommend bringing Bear to the veterinarian to have him examined. If this is not new I would try adding water to the food to see if he would like it. I would not hand feed him or just feed him piece by piece. Would he eat off of a plate? Or maybe if his bowls are not raised, raising his bowls. I would also make sure he isn't thin. So if your veterinarian said he is ideal weight as long as he is not losing I am not as concerned. They will eat when they are hungry unless something medical is going on. With you hand feeding or adding stuff he is going to wait to eat because he knows he will be getting something else. Boiled skinless chicken breast or cooked eggs could be added as toppers - just be sure that these foods along with other treats make up less than 10% of the total diet so there aren't any nutritional deficiencies.

Hello and thank you for your post! In regards to these types of meals, they are meant to be full meals. However, most of these are high in fat and can cause dietary indiscretion. I would be concerned about weight gain with these meals. I typically prefer more balanced foods such as Science Diet, Royal Canin, Eukanuba or natural balance.

If this canned food is proper dog food then there should be no problem for your dog to digest it. Dogs do not need pate'd food to be able to digest the food. Just make sure that you calculate the added canned food into her total daily intake, like you do with her treats.

It is generally fine to give Thanos a variety of canned food as long as it does not upset his stomach. Many owners will mix a small amount of canned food in with the dry food to get their pets to eat the whole meal. Some dogs can be very picky, and if Brownie enjoys eating food with a little wet food mixed in, that's not a problem. Many brands of dry dog food also carry equivalent wet foods, and you can mix that in while still providing a balanced diet that is healthy for Brownie to eat. If you do add in wet food, you may just want to decrease the amount of dry food slightly to account for the increase in calories for adding extras.
