My dog bites over food and won't listen. How do I train him?

I would have a trainer come to your home to see exactly what is going on. It may be the way you approach her or it could be something else triggering this. They then can work with you to tell you how to fix it and deal with these situations. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I think it is harder when they are older to train them. Just like people they form habits and know what they have been getting away with. Food aggression is a serious one and a lot of times there is no "cure" just management. The first thing to master with Buddy is for him to sit and stay seated until you tell him it is ok to get up. Leash him or tether him. Put the food bowl down in front of him, tell him to sit. Practice sitting for longer and longer periods of time not allowing him to get up or go to the food until he receives the command from you. Buddy should also know how to come on command even if he has a great treat he doesn't want to let go of. He should know "Leave it" and "drop it." Most importantly all adults in the house should know not to take something food wise from him with out giving him a command to "come," "leave it," or "drop it." And no children should be around him during feeding time or he isn't allowed high value items when children are around. I hope this helps and I wish you the best!

I would encourage you to contact a dog trainer that can work with you and Micah in person to really take care of this behavior. The sooner these behaviors are dealt with, the more likely it is that you can improve and resolve them. It sounds like Snoopy is being food aggressive. Do not touch him or go near him when eating, and stop giving him treats for now. I would get him in with a professional behavior expert to deal with this behavior, as I never recommend owners do it on their own due to safety issues. Oh dear, what a cute little devil. Spanking is not the answer, but I think you do need the help of a trainer to help Pixie lead a more sociable life. Basic obedience is always a good place to start. She needs to learn to sit & stay while you place food dishes down & pick up toys. It is not okay, even with that adorable face, to be so aggressive with toys & food. Resource guarding in dogs can be a serious issue and it is ver concerning that your dog bit you.
