Why is my dog foaming at the mouth when eating? Is it serious?

Nausea and diarrhea can occur secondary to conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, dietary indiscretion, parasites, among other possibilities. I recommend that you have Lily evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. At the very least they can start her on medications to make her feel better and check her hydration status. In the meantime, keep water available at all times to try to prevent dehydration. No, this isn't normal. Foaming around the mouth can be a sign of nausea, poisoning, difficulty swallowing, poor dental hygiene, and even rabies. If Tucky is vaccinated for rabies, then it is extremely unlikely that would be a cause of the hyper salivation. Licking the lips is also a sign of nausea. I recommend withholding food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If he continues to foam at the mouth in the absence of food, on the bland diet, or becomes lethargic he will need to see a vet.

It is also possible that his teeth are causing him discomfort and leading to the foam that you are noticing. If he is otherwise acting normally I would recommend continuing to monitor this problem. It's very common for dogs to have a bit of foam on their tongue or near their mouth if they have been running and playing hard - this happens because they are panting hard during exercise, which dries out their mouth and makes their saliva thicker, causing it to look foamy. As long as Mia is acting normal otherwise, this should not be any cause for concern :)

The foaming by itself is not concerning. This usually happens when they bark a lot, or run around a lot. As long as she is otherwise eating, drinking and acting normal, I would not be concerned about the foaming. I hope that helps and all is well with Bella.

Your dog may have ingested something bitter or toxic, burned or otherwise irritated his mouth or could be nauseated. I recommend getting him seen by your vet right away for an exam and treatment if needed.
