My dog has flies on his head. Is it a botfly or skin infection?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 7 months and 16 days old | 32 lbs

What is on my dogs head? Is this botfly? Flies have been on his head a lot lately when we go hiking and they just sit there and keep bothering him.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It looks like Pickles has a superficial skin infection on his head. I’m not sure what caused the infection but it is likely the flies are attracted to the infection smell. I recommend taking him to a vet for treatment of the infection and to look for the cause. In the meantime, you can wash the area with mild soap and water and be sure to dry it well. I would keep him inside until it’s scabbed over so flies don’t keep coming back. Pickles needs to see the veterinarian to get this cleared up. Pickles' hair loss is more likely to be related to ringworm (which humans can get), scabies (which can also effect humans) or other skin mites, fleas or allergies. The flies landing on the area can spread infection as well as they may lay eggs in it causing a maggot infection:

That infections needs a correct diagnosis and likely antibiotics. Additionally, keep it clean, dry and protected from scratching or rubbing with an elizabethan collar. Have Pickles examined within the next day to start this process. A physical exam and some basic diagnostics are needed to determine the underlying cause. Best of luck.

How do I stop flies from bothering my dog? Any natural tips?

Flies are attracted to foul-smelling things, such as feces or other organic material, ie fluid or tissue from a wild animal. If Dottie has flies that bother her, she may just need a good bath using a dog-safe shampoo to remove any material or smells that are attracting flies. If you are concerned about FLEAS, a bath may help, but ultimately Dottie will need either a topical or oral medications to prevent and kill fleas. These should be purchased from your veterinarian (as many over-the-counter flea medications are not effective and may actually be harmful to your dog). I hope this is helpful!

Why does my dog have a smelly bald spot, rashes, dandruff, and ticks?

The smell usually indicates skin infection, so ideally you should take Jaceky to your local vets to get a course of antibiotics. Alternatively, you can first clip the wounds from the hair and use antiseptic solution ( 4% chlorhexidine would be best) and clean it twice a day. Also, make sure that your dog doesn't lick or scratch the wounds. For ticks, the most effective treatments are spot-on skin solutions that you can buy over-the-counter at pet shops or online.

My dog's head has a bleeding hole after I removed a scab. Botfly?

Bots typically do not have scabs as they need the to wound to stay open so they can breathe and get air. it is hard to tell by that picture but it does it seem deep enough for a bot fly. Keep it clean tonight with mild soap and water. If it is not Scabbed Over and drying by tomorrow, then take him to the vet to have it examined.

If antibiotics and antifungals have not helped, it is possible that Pickle has mange. The oral flea and tick preventatives simparica, Nexgard and Bravecto are often effective in treating demodectic mange and can be purchased from your veterinarian. If that doesn’t help, having a skin biopsy performed either at your veterinaian or with a veterinary dermatology specialist at a specialty hospital would likely be the next best course of action. My dog has flies after bath. Ear infection or needs another bath?

Mike doesn't need more than one bath per month, the flies might be due to an infection of the skin/ears but the hot weather in India can also be the direct cause of the flies. Seresto collar which is a protection collar against fleas and ticks also works well repelling flies, you might want to consider this option.
