My dog's head has a bleeding hole after I removed a scab. Botfly?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 11 months and 8 days old | 90 lbs

Hi there. I came home today and noticed my dog had a lunp on his head. I removed this which seemed to be a scab and saw this type of hole that was bleeding and looked sore. My dog does tend to sniff around in the garden and the property we have recently moved to used to have rabbits. I am hoping this is not a botfly. Any advice?

Bots typically do not have scabs as they need the to wound to stay open so they can breathe and get air. it is hard to tell by that picture but it does it seem deep enough for a bot fly. Keep it clean tonight with mild soap and water. If it is not Scabbed Over and drying by tomorrow, then take him to the vet to have it examined.
