My dog still has fleas after Frontline. Can I apply Vectra early?

Hi and thank you for your question on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Generally speaking, it is advised to administer one type of topical flea/tick preventative at one time. Administering more than one topical type in a 30 day period may be an overload to her system. The Fipronil is liking absorbed already, so I would not advise you apply the Vectra. Instead, you may ask your veterinarian about a administering capstar or another fast acting oral flea treatment medication. Next month, you may apply the Vectra. Hopefully that will do the trick.

A [flea](https://www.petcoach.co/article/fleas-life-cycle-anatomy-disease-transmission) infestation on your pet or in your home can be [difficult and frustrating](https://www.petcoach.co/article/why-are-fleas-so-hard-to-kill) to deal with. Yes, if after two weeks the [flea preventive you applied isn't working](https://www.petcoach.co/article/6-reasons-your-flea-prevention-isnt-working), you can reapply flea treatment early, or switch to another brand. I recommend using Advantix or a chewable prescription product from your vet, like Bravecto, Nexgard, Simparica, or Credelio. This recommendation is unrelated to Petco or PetCoach. If you are seeing fleas on Mia now, you can give her Capstar ([Nitenpyram](https://www.petcoach.co/pet-medication/nitenpyram)). It's a one time pill that starts killing adult fleas in 30 minutes and is safe to use with a topical treatment. Use a monthly preventive on all pets for at least 3 consecutive months to break the flea life cycle. Year round use is preferred. You will also have to [treat the environment](https://www.petcoach.co/article/5-tips-to-get-rid-of-fleas). Wash all bedding in hot soapy water, and vacuum the furniture and carpet surfaces. Discard of the bag or empty the canister outdoors immediately afterwards. Use a spray, such as Indoorex or Knockout ES, in the house and to prevent reinfestation.

In my opinion and that of many of my class mates is that Frontline is starting to fail and all of us are seeing flea infestation breakthroughs from it. It personally happened to all of my pets over one year ago. I used Frontline for years without problems then the summer of 2016 changed. All 3 dogs and one cat had flea problems. I went to another product (Bravecto) and the problem dissolved after one dose so I know it wasn't some horrible environmental problem. I like Vectra 3D because it has a repellent nature to it. It is becoming increasing important for heartworm protection also since it can repel mosquitoes. We are starting to see heartworm resistance in the gulf states and it's not that people are giving the heartworm pills. There is actual resistance in some mosquitoes to heartworm pills and pairing the heartworm pills up with a topical flea/tick with repellent characteristics is being advised in the deep south to combat the problem. Hello, & thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Yes, you can absolutely place a Seresto Collar on Nala today, if you wish. But please consider that here may be other reasons besides fleas that are causing her to itch. Dogs can suffer from many allergies, just like we can, & sometimes fall can be the worse time of year for this. You will probably need to speak with your veterinarian to see if Nala does have allergies, & not fleas, & what medications will work best for her. Take care.

Unfortunately you cannot use topical medications that close together. Your best bet here is to try washing off the product immediately with Dish dawn detergent, and then to reapply the newer medication in 2 weeks. In the meantiime you can give Boogie a Capstar just about as often as you need to to rid fleas immediately after seeing them. You can purchase a Capstar at any pet store that carries this brand. This is not a preventative but it is a flea ridder that works fast (witihin 1 hr!). I hope that you are able to give Boogie some relief following his intense flea infestation. You definitely want to give him a calming aloe based or oatmeal based bath right after the Dawn bath, and a soothing conditoner from your local pet store can also be helpful. Frontline (fipronil) can actually be applied every 3 weeks so it's close enough for you to apply. I will tell you that in my own experiences with fipronil, it seems to be less effective on fleas. There seem to be lots of reports of product failure with fipronil and I have even noticed that with my personal pets. So go ahead and reapply. Remember to not bathe Hana for at least 2-3 days and I always advise if you need to bathe her, get some oatmeal shampoo without soap or detergent. Soaps and detergent containing shampoos will strip some of the product off of her and will make it even less effective and cut down on the time that the product will work. If the fipronil continues to fail I would consult with your local veterinarian and see what products they would advise in your area. Good luck with Hana

Fleas can be frustrating to manage! Since you have already applied Frontline to Milo, consider also giving him a tablet of Capstar. This medication can be found in most pet stores and kills adult fleas in about 30-60 minutes. The Frontline will then be effective for preventing fleas for the rest of the month. Be sure to continue to use a good quality flea preventative regularly and discuss other prescription-based options with Milo's vet at his vaccine appointment. I hope that all goes well!
