My dog is crying after PetArmor flea treatment. Can I apply Frontline?

Dogs are not supposed to get wet for at least 24 hours after application of a topical flea medication, and more than likely it was washed off during the bath. You can reapply the flea treatment, and I would give them Capstar given you have seen fleas. It's a one time pill that starts killing fleas within 30 minutes, and it's safe to be given at the same time as the spot on treatment. Just as a note, I would not recommend using Frontline. In my experience (and from the experience of many colleagues), there is a resistance to Frontline, and you may not get the best results from it. I recommend using Advantage or Revolution instead. You will also have to disinfect the environment. Wash their bedding in hot soapy water, and vacuum the furniture and carpet surfaces. You can use a spray to kill fleas in the house, such as Indorex, or a flea bomb would work well to kill the fleas in the home.

I would refrain from reapplying this topical product, because you cannot be sure how much of it was rinsed off and it is best to not overdose him. Also the biting and scratching can be normal for any pet that has just received flea preventative if there was a large infestation of fleas. The "itch cascade" as we call it can last even after the parasites are gone, and often pets require a short course of steroids or a steroid shot to stop the itch completely. Your best option at this point, if you still see evidence of fleas or ticks, is to follow up with a medication called Capstar. This is the only flea ridding product that can be used in conjunction with topical flea preventatives, because it does not last in the pets system very long. You can safely redose the Pet armour in 2 weeks time. However I will say I am not a fan of this product and find there are better, more effective ones on the market. For instance, Bravecto, Nexgard, Advantage Multi, just to name a few.

I'm so sorry you are having a hard time with Boogie! Capstar is safe to give daily, but ONLY kills adult fleas. More fleas will be jumping onto Boogie daily until all of the viable eggs in the environment have hatched or been rid of. Frontline (and Advantage and Revolution) kills adult fleas AND makes the eggs laid by the fleas that are on the dog unable to hatch once they are in the environment. That's why it takes some time to see results, whether you are using Frontline, Advantage or Revolution. That is also why Capstar continues to be beneficial in killing the adults that are on the dog. Think of it this way. Adults fleas get onto the dog. They eat, mate, poop, and lay eggs. The poop from the fleas, and the eggs, both drop off into the environment. When the eggs hatch out, which takes 2 weeks, the larvae (baby fleas) feed on the flea poop that was dropped into the environment. They ultimately develop into the adult fleas that will again find an adult host to infect. Since an adult flea can lay 50 eggs a day, you can see how important it is to treat the environment and break the life cycle. Until you've got better control, apply either Frontline (or Advantage, or Revolution) as frequently as recommended by your vet; typically this will be about 2 week intervals for 4-8 weeks. The two treatments are not closely related but I would still recommend 7-10days before reapplying. You do not mention why you washed off the advantage but I would recommend combing with a flea comb to remove fleas in the meantime if still present. It may be worth considering using comfortis or capstar tablets if he does not tolerate spot on medications (it is often the carrier and not the active ingredient that pets are sensitive to)

You should also wait about 2-3 days after bathing to apply Frontline to allow the skin to be slightly oily to optimally absorb the product.

You can wash the product off his har with Dawn dish soap (it is a grease/oil remover). Then wait 24 hours and apply the Frontline again. If you can't get the topical product on him effectively you may need to switch to an oral product or use a Seresto collar. One Seresto collar lasts up to 8 months. It is very cost effective and easy to use. You didn't mention the age of your puppy so be sure to read all package instructions to make sure products are safe to use on whatever age your puppy is. Hi and thank you for your question on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Generally speaking, it is advised to administer one type of topical flea/tick preventative at one time. Administering more than one topical type in a 30 day period may be an overload to her system. The Fipronil is liking absorbed already, so I would not advise you apply the Vectra. Instead, you may ask your veterinarian about a administering capstar or another fast acting oral flea treatment medication. Next month, you may apply the Vectra. Hopefully that will do the trick.
