Is it safe to use flea meds if my pet is near the weight limit?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Why does topical flea meds have a weight range? I’m asking because I have two months of flea meds left and their flea meds are up to 20lbs. My male is up to 20lbs and my female is 17lbs. I’d like to use the rest of the flea meds as they are very expensive but I do not know if they will gain anymore weight in the next two months.

This is because the active ingredient amount is weight dependent. A bigger pet needs more of the active ingredient to kill the fleas than a smaller pet. It's fine to use these on your pets this month and next month. If they are close to a year old, they will not grow much bigger. I hope this helps!
