My dog is on heartworm meds. Can I give fenbendazole for roundworms?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 53 lbs

Hi, I have a heart worm positive dog that I recently adopted from a shelter, he is currently undergoing treatment for the worms (injection every month) through them. The past few days he has had diarrhea, and last night he vomited and there were roundworms in the vomit. Will there be negative interactions between his heart worm medication and fenbendazole for the roundworms? Shelter is not answering and I hate to think of the poor guy being infested with more worms. Thank you

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question. Poor Louie! There are no significant drug interactions of fenbendazole in small animal use, so using it with ivermectin is not an issue. I hope this helps!

My dog has roundworm diarrhea. Can I give Pepcid or Imodium?

No, I would not recommend giving either of these. I would deworm Gunner with a good broad-spectrum dewormer like Panacur to get rid of the parasites - this will clear up the diarrhea. In the meantime, you can feed him a bland diet of plain boiled chicken and rice for the next 2-3 days to help encourage his stools to be firmer.

Safe for small dog to take multiple meds for fever, stool, worms?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Bella! The metronidazole is an antibiotic and could help with the fever. If you want to start with the metronidazole and the dewormer first that is fine. Recheck her temperature in 24 hours. If it is still elevated give the loxicam. The loxicam is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory. Good luck!

My dog accidentally took extra medicine. Should I call the vet?

Thank you for contacting Pet Coach with your question. Fenbendazole is a pretty safe medication, and you didn't give dog #1 a double dose. That dog should be fine. As for dog #2, you may see GI upset in the form of vomiting, anorexia, and/or diarrhea. If the vomiting or diarrhea is severe, you will need to take dog #2 into a vet immediately. Can I safely give my dog Ivermectin for heartworms and Nexgard?

Droncit (praziquantel) Canine Tablets for Animal Use are safe to use in pregnant dogs (do not use Drontal plus as it contains Febantel). Fenbendazole (Panacur) is also safe to use in pregnant dogs.
