My dog's eye is swollen, weeping, with discharge. Saline didn't help. What now?

It certainly looks as though Chavo has somehow irritated his eye and likely has continued to rub it causing more irritation. My biggest concern would be that he has scratched his cornea (the outermost surface if his eye) which can be a very painful condition and can lead to infection. There is also a chance that the irritation and discharge is just from allergies, this would be the best case scenario. Since you are unable to bring Chavo in to see a vet you could try calling your vet and see if they can recommend an over the counter allergy medication that may help. Good luck!

It looks like Skylar's third eyelid is elevated and irritated, and there is significant swelling of her eyelids. I would recommend seeing a veterinarian as soon as possible. She could have an infection of her eye or a scratch on the surface, or even a puncture of the eye if there is a large amount of watery fluid.

He can have a possible infection or conjunctivitis since it is affected both eyes. Since the discharge is getting worse and he does not want to open his eyes, it is best he sees a vet to determine if there is a scratch on the cornea or just an infection. There is topical antibiotics +/- a steroid to help clear them. The only thing you can do at home is rinse with sterile eye wash and try to apply a warm compress to help with the swelling.

Hi, and thanks for your question. That is probably due to a mild to moderate conjunctivitis, probably secondary to a trauma or infection. A check up would be needed as appropriate treatment would include antibiotics and anti-inflammatory eye drops. Corneal injuries must be ruled out as well. A buster collar would be essential to avoid any self inflicted damage. I would recommend a check up by your vet - it looks like the third eyelid is inflamed (common with viral infections) and may be developing a cherry eye. In the meantime, bathing with sterile saline eye wash may help keep the eye fresh and clean and reduce any discomfort

It sounds like this might be due to an allergy or autoimmune problem given the response to corticosteroids. Sometimes the lymph tissue associated with the third eyelid can become enlarged and I’m wondering if that is the case with the right eye, but it’s difficult to say without being able to examine in person. If the symptoms are not resolving with treatment you may want to ask your vet about referral to an ophthalmologist.

Poor girl. Because she is keeping her eye closed, it is very likely she has a scratch or ulcer on her cornea (eye surface). Because of this type of injury, Suziee Lu will need to see your vet to have the eye checked. If there is a scratch, as suspected, then she will need topical prescription eye medication to get this to heal properly. It is ok to wipe the outside of the lid with warm salt water until you can get her in to your vet for further care.
