How to give my dog pain meds after eye surgery if she won't eat?

That should not be a problem. The only risk is that Tramadol won't be effective. I would recommend to have Gum Gum checked if the signs (pain and inappetence) are not getting any better in the next 12-24hours.

It depends what type of pain killers she is taking, as it is every 8 hours i assume it is an opioid which is fine to give even on an empty stomach. antibiotics can also be given on an empty stomach, although not ideal as this can cause nausea. try giving her some boiled chicken, treats or a canned food called a/d from Hills.

Try feeding her some sloppy soup with rice and white boiled chicken, or canned dog food. You may have to sit next to her and entice her to eat. Be patient, she will start eating . The Tramadol sometimes will not work very well, so she may be in pain.

Unfortunately eye pain can be difficult to treat - oral medications sometimes don’t seem to make much difference. There is some evidence that tramadol is not metabolized well in dogs so I think gabapentin might be a reasonable alternative. Ultimately healing the ulcer will be most important - if it does not seem to be healing well you may need to see a specialist to have a burr procedure or keratotomy in order for it to heal. Topical pain medication might be another option but can sometimes slow the healing process.

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Pet Coach. All of those medications would be ideal to be given as soon as you can rather then waiting until tonight to "try again". If she was due for all three this morning, I would recommend to try again mid-day. Tramadol can be given every 6-8hours to make her comfortable so try to get that into her as soon as you can. Prednisone and clavamox should be given with food or directly after a meal. I would recommend to feed her some lunch and then try to give those meds again after the meal. Maybe with a treat, cheese, pill pocket. If you are able to get either one of those meds into her this afternoon, then skip the evening dose and resume in early morning. The sooner the better.

Hello. I would not be annoyed at your veterinarian as things can happen, but it is clear that there needs to be either a treatment change, or the surgery site may need to be reexplored to make sure all infected material was removed. Previcox is a good pain reliever, but gabapentin is much better adjunct to pain management than tramadol. The antibiotic you are using is usually adequate, but your vet may also choose to augment this with something else, like a fluoroquinolone. Under normal circumstances, an eye should not look like this 1 week post surgery. You do need to contact your vet to make them aware of Pearls' condition. Hello. Thank you for using PetCoach. Gabapentin may be given with or without food so it doesn't matter that she is NPO. If you normally hide the medication in food you would need to give her the medication by placing the pill directly down her throat.
