My dog has an eye infection. Should I give him vitamins or herbs?

Unfortunately if Emma's eye has atrophied and the vet says its dead, there is nothing that can be done to help revive it. The eye is a very delicate structure, and if it's severely diseased, there are not vitamins or supplements that will bring back the eye. Dogs can live normal lives with one eye, however, so you do not need to be worried about her quality of life. I'm sorry I don't have a better answer for you :-(

Hi and thanks for posting. Topical eye medications are really best for eye infections including conjunctivitis and other conditions of the eye. The Augmentin would help treat any skin infection around the eyelid or skin surrounding the eye. An accident such as finger poke in the eye can cause injury to the cornea of the eye which will need to be diagnosed with a vet eye exam. Specific eye medications are used to treat various conditions of the eye such as corneal injuries so it is best to see your vet if the eye appears swollen in any way.

I'm assuming that the enterobacter bacteria was cultured from something like a corneal ulcer. This seems like an unusual bacteria for this location - enterobacter is most commonly found in urinary tract infections and occasionally skin infections. Since you know what type of bacteria is present I'm assuming your vet was also able to tailor antibiotic therapy to this specific bacteria as well and if so hopefully the infection will resolve. Sometimes there is irreversible damage done to the eyes and vision cannot return, and other times an infection heals and the eye recovers completely.
