My dog's eye is hazy with discharge. What's wrong and can I use drops?

Oh dear! This sounds like something that definitely needs to be seen by a vet as soon as possible. Discharge from the eyes can be caused by an eye infection, an injury to the eye such as a corneal scratch or ulcer, allergies, or even chronic problem such as dry eye. The fact that one eye now looks cloudy is very concerning - this could be due to a severe corneal ulcer, an infection or inflammatory reaction inside the eye, glaucoma, or a cataract. Eye problems like this need prompt attention because there is a risk of permanent damage or even vision loss the longer it goes without treatment. Because of this, I would recommend taking Diesel to an emergency vet today - he/she can examine his eye and use a special stain if needed to check for an ulcer or other injury, and will prescribe appropriate medication to treat the problem depending on what is found.

Poor Blaze! I'm sorry to hear that he's having a problem with is eye. Squinting, excessive draining, and a "glazed" look can be caused by an eye infection, or by an injury to the eye such as a corneal scratch or ulcer. He will need an eye exam by your vet to diagnose the problem, and will probably need prescription meds to treat it effectively - so it's good that you're planning to take him in for a visit when you can. In the meantime, I would not recommend using any type of ointment or medication in th eye until you can see the vet to find out what's wrong - eyes are delicate, and you can accidentally make the problem worse by treating with something inappropriate. You can use plain saline eye wash to gently rinse his eye, if he'll let you, and use a warm washcloth or cotton ball to wipe away the discharge if it seems to be bothering him. This will not treat the underlying problem, but may help to make him a bit more comfortable until you are able to see the vet.

Increased tear production can be secondary to different issues affecting the eye. Roscoe might have a little foreign body under the eyelid or a superficial abrasion of the cornea called ulcera or might have an inflammation or infection of the conjunctiva. I have just listed the most common causes of eye discharge but given the complexity and fragility of the area I would strongly suggest to have Roscoe checked by a veterinarian for a full ophthalmologic examination.

At least in these pictures, his cornea appears affected. I highly recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. It is very hard to make out the photo but I can see the blue, redness and discharge. You are right the dig needs to see a vet. There appears to be an infection going on and the blue colour either means oedema of the cornea which is the transparent eye layer at the front, or uveitis which is inflammation behind the cornea. I would suspect tgat the cornea may be damged which is very serious. Either way the dog needs a vet because at best this will require eye drops to heal but may need more extensive treatment. It is currently the owners responsibility so I would remind her of her obligation to keep the animal healthy and urge her to visit the vet.

It sounds as Bert is suffering from an eye infection, it is relatively common in dogs. you will need to take him to the vet the first chance you get, the vet will check the eyes, if it is indeed a simple eye infection your vet will prescribe an antibiotic eye drops that will probably solve the problem in no time.

The sensitivity to light is a sign of pain. I wiukd first be worried about an ulcer on the cornea. This can cause pain and a discharge and easy to test for. Glaucoma can have a big eye and a red eye, not usually squinting. An eye infection can also cause these issues along with a dry eye. Your vet can check the tear production and look for an ulcer as each one has medicine that can correct this
