What can I put on my puppy's eye for hair loss and scaly skin?

This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking (if any). Hair loss around the eyes may be due to a fungal infection, bacterial infection, or mites. Your veterinarian can diagnose these potential conditions with a fungal culture and a skin scraping. I would recommend Baby Girl visit her vet soon to have the possibilities above ruled out so a diagnosis can be made and she can receive the most appropriate treatment from her veterinarian. Some skin creams can be irritating to the skin or may make matters worse depending on what the underlying cause is, so getting a prescription medication from her vet is recommended. Hello and thank you for your post! A patch of hair loss could indicate multiple things. I am assuming that she is quite Young since you are calling her a puppy. If she is very young, she might have a patch of hair loss due to skin mites called Demodex. This patch could also be infectious, bacterial or fungal. I would suggest getting her seen by her veterinarian to have diagnostic tests performed to see what the primary cause of this patch of hair loss is. Your veterinarian will likely scrape the skin in that affected area as an initial test. Depending on the cause, that will be able to prescribe the most appropriate treatments for this. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Bruno! I would have him rechecked. I would clean the skin and shave the fur away. I would consider oral steroids and oral antibiotics. I would also consider treating with with Nexgard to rule out demodex. I would also consider a different eye ointment, one with a steroid in it. Be sure your Vet checks to be sure he doesn't have a clogged tear duct or any other ocular issue that would cause increased tearing. I hope this helps and I wish you and Bruno the very best!

Human products can be used but you’ll need to keep him in a cone so he doesn’t lick the medication. Veterinary products are recommended since they are designed for pets. They have several over the counter medications at PetCo that will be effective to treat his spots. I recommend bathing him first in a medicated shampoo then using a hotspot type medication on the sores. If they aren’t healing or getting worse then please take him in for an exam and treatment. Hello. It is very difficult to see, but it LOOKS like the mother dog may have gotten a little rough with this puppy & caused a skin injury. I would pick up some antibacterial wash like Hibiclens ( available at all pharmacies ) & gently clean the area twice daily. Rinse & dry the area thoroughly. I would not put anything else on the puppy as Mom will just lick it off. As long as the pup seems to be eating well, then I would see how this goes for a few days.
