Dog has eye gunk after boarding. Is it an infection or canine cough?

Hi, I can see the yellowish discharge in the right eye. In cases of eyes I would always play it safe and recommend to have it checked by a vet properly stain the eye to ensure cornea is intact and no foreign body etc. Since the dog is active , drinking , eating etc and not scratching/rubbing or bothered by the eye it is not urgent but I would schedule an appointment with the vet when they are open after the new year. Monitor she is not scratching the eye as even one movement can scratch and self traumatize the eye, so if start bothering her and she is scratching take her to the vet sooner as she will need an E collar.

Yes , it is possible that Theo can still get kennel cough, even though he was vaccinated. Kennel cough is a respiratory disease complex that can be caused by a large number of various bacteria and viruses. The vaccination only covers Bordetella bronchiseptica, which is the bacterium which is the main cause. So if your dog catches kennel cough he can still get infected with the other bacteria and viruses, but he will be immune against Bordetella. This then usually causes the kennel cough to be milder. Because Theo has a oozing eye I suggest you take him to the vet for an exam. If he has a fever as well and should he have an eye infection he will need antibiotics, If he has a bad cough your vet can also give him some cough medicine. Usually kennel cough is self-limiting and goes away within 3-4 weeks, but sometimes a dog needs medication to help it get over it.

Yes, a vet should look at this before you drop her off for boarding. She may have an eye infection and that needs quick treatment to prevent it from getting worse. Also, there would be some concern from the boarding facility if your pet came in with eye discharge that had not been checked. They have to make sure she does not have something contagious to the other dogs that will be boarding there. They may refuse to admit her to the facility without a veterinarian's okay.

Dogs can get eye infections, allergies that lead to infections, scratches on the cornea and dry eye. These will all lead to increased eye discharge. Maverick’s discharge looks slightly green from the photos and this is generally indicative of an infection. If the green discharge lasts longer than 24hours, he seems uncomfortable, he is rubbing at the eye or he is squinting, he needs to see the veterinarian. This can be caused by either an eye injury/trauma from playing or by an eye infection (common in boarding kennels), either way you must take her to the vet to get the eye checked and she will probably need a prescription antibiotic eye drops to solve this problem.

I would perhaps give it a few more days if the discharge is not green or yellow. Wipe the eyes clean several times daily. If the discharge does become green or yellow, if Oakley starts rubbing his eyes or squinting more than usual, if the whites of his eyes are looking red or if his eyes look cloudy then a trip to the vet is in order.
