Why is my dog's eye almost completely black and I can't see the iris?

There are a couple of possibilities here for the changes to Creo's iris. One is iris atrophy, which is a normal aging change. This can often result in pigment change and a "moth-eaten" appearance to the iris or an irregular iris border. Another would be a uveal cyst, which is a darkly pigmented circular lesion that can be attached to the iris. Both of these are generally benign. If you notice any changes in Creo's vision, changes to the eye, or signs of pain (squinting, redness, swelling, etc.), have him re-evaluated by your vet just to be safe.

This trauma probably caused a trauma in the anterior chamber and possibly a corneal damage as well. Pain is involved due to the size of pupil and blinking. An immediate check up would be needed as appropriate treatment would include antibiotics and anti-inflammatory eye drops. Corneal injuries must be ruled out as well. Hello, depending on what caused the purulent material on her eye, what you are seeing now may be consistent with scar tissue. Now, if she is having any discharge, if the normal white part of the eye (sclera) is red, or if she has bright red conjunctiva, then she should definitely be evaluated by a veterinarian. I would not recommend putting anything else into her eye until you have your veterinarian evaluate her. If she has an ulcer or an infection, putting the wrong medications in her eye may lead to a worsening condition and even the loss of her eye. I would definitely have her seen by your veterinarian if you are concerned she could be in pain or if you think her eye is not looking any better by tomorrow. Hope this helps and best of luck.

This could be just a normal pigment change or it could be something more serious. I would have your vet take a look to ensure there is no infection or other abnormalities with the eye. i hope this helps!

What you're seeing is likely the small blood vessels of the eye and pigmentation of the cornea. This is typically very normal, but if you are concerned you should take Dunbar to the vet for an ocular exam.

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. In pugs, this is a normal thing to see. There is increased pigmentation (melanin) deposited on the eye. Pugs can develop pigmentary keratitis, in which a dark film develops over the eye itself. This does not cause any pain and unfortunately there is nothing you can do to make this go away or slow down the progression. If the eye becomes irritated, you can use steroid drops. Something that a vet would need to prescribe Dexter after examining him. I hope this helps!
