Can my pug take enrofloxacin long-term for ear infection & pyritinol?

The ear has a poor blood supply, so the medications used to treat the ear infection have to be topical and applied in the ear. In addition, ear infections are caused by yeast and ear mites in addition to bacteria, so the cause has to be diagnosed in order to treat it correctly. Ear infections can be very uncomfortable and potentially dangerous (if they get bad enough) for your dog. The best thing you can do is take her to your vet so they can determine what type of infection is present and they can prescribe the appropriate medication. If you are unable to do this at this time the best thing you can do for Ruby it to purchase an over the counter gentle ear cleaner and clean her ears once or twice a day, depending on how much debris is in the ears. This likely won't fix the problem but may be able to keep it under control until you see your vet.

Antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medications can be given orally as well, but they will be indeed less effective and take longer to work. Poor Bruno. He should be on oral anti-fungal medication +/- topical antifungal cream or shampoo, depending on what areas of his body is affected. For really resistant infections often pets need extended time on the medication which can be anywhere from 2-6 weeks. I know it's tough to be compliant for that long, but it may be necessary to clear Bruno's infected skin completely and for good.

It may take several days to see improvement after starting medications. If your dog is extremely uncomfortable due to inflammation in the ear, you may ask your vet if an anti-inflammatory drug such as a steroid or NSAID can be prescribed to help with the discomfort until the ear antibiotic kicks in. If you haven't seen improvement and several days have passed, it is possible a resistant bacteria is growing in the ear and you may need a different medication.

Enrofloxacin is a safe antibiotic to give Flip and it will not be detrimental to his growth. While it is a fluoroquinolone, it is not recommended to give to puppies under six months of age due to the effects on the growth of a puppy. Because he is over six months of age, it is fine to give to him :-)
