My puppy's elbow injury is back. How can I best manage her pain?

Shadow must see a vet for this issue. The swelling could mean a fracture or dislocation in the elbow. You cannot tell if something is fracture or not many times just be looking at the leg or feeling it. An x-ray needs to be done. A bite would not cause that much pain and swelling. There are also congenital abnormalities (like ununited aconeal process) that could be going on in that elbow. Please take Shadow to the vet. This cannot be treated at home. There is no over the counter medications you can give to a 2 month old puppy. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

There isn't much you can do to help her since there aren't any over the counter medications that are safe to give her. In humans, we would do RICE - rest ice compression and elevation. But those are hard to make a puppy do. So try to keep her from running or jumping, and use a bag of frozen peas wrapped in a thin towel for 10-15 minutes several times a day.

If you can keep her from walking or running around by putting her into a crate, for example, and can so make her rest, then this will likely alleviate some pain. However if the pain increases or your dog appears to be very painful, you will need to take Saki to an emergency veterinarian for an exam, diagnosis and pain control. We cannot legally recommend medications here, I am afraid.

Pipi could have a soft tissue injury, a dislocated bone or even a broken bone. I recommend having your veterinarian do an exam and maybe an X-ray to diagnose her. She may need rest, dog anti inflammatory medication or even a splint. I would not splint it yourself as that could accidentally affect her growth plates and cause long term issues. Do not give any human medication as it can be toxic to dogs.

If Lucy was prescribed pain medications by her vet, you can certainly use those. You can also apply an ice pack wrapped in a thin towel if you can locate where she is most tender. Other than that, keep her calm and encourage her to rest. If she isn’t feeling better in a day or two, it’s best to have her checked out by a vet.

Poor Lily. When a pet isn't showing a pain response but limping on their back leg, it could indicate that they have either torn a ligament in the joint or have a severe muscle sprain. Also if you don't notice any obvious swelling, then a fracture is likely not the cause. Rest her, no running, jumping playing and leash walk only for the next couple of weeks. You can also do cold compresses on the limb 1-2 times a day. if there is no improvement within 3-4 days, then it's best to get her seen by your veterinarian for a full exam and pet friendly pain medication. She may also need x-rays of the leg to determine the underlying injury (cause). Do not give her people pain meds however because these can be quite toxic to pets and cause major liver and/or kidney damage. It's better to get all pain and anti-inflammatory meds from your vet. Do not give any medications to your dog without the advice of your veterinarian. Many OTC medications can be toxic to pets. Ideally, Ziggy should be examined by your veterinarian or a veterinary orthopedic specialist to diagnose ligament damage, arthritic conditions, fractures or tumors. X-rays of the knees and hips will likely be recommended. These can be done under anesthesia or sedation. A veterinary house all service may be an option for an exam. Afterwards, a sedative and/or pain management can be dispensed to make the trip to the clinic easier and less stressful for all parties.
