My puppy is limping with a swollen, painful front elbow. What's wrong?

Pipi could have a soft tissue injury, a dislocated bone or even a broken bone. I recommend having your veterinarian do an exam and maybe an X-ray to diagnose her. She may need rest, dog anti inflammatory medication or even a splint. I would not splint it yourself as that could accidentally affect her growth plates and cause long term issues. Do not give any human medication as it can be toxic to dogs.

You should take him to the vet in order to get it checked, it could be an insect bite but it could also be something more serious such as a trauma to the elbow or even a tumor, this must be checked by your vet ASAP.

Poor Shadow! Since it sounds like the limping has been happening on and off for a while now, yes - I would definitely recommend taking him to the vet to have this checked. Your vet can do a thorough orthopedic exam to help determine what is causing the limp, and may also take x-rays if needed to help diagnose the problem. Shadow may need pain medication or an anti-inflammatory to be used when he limps, or he could even need surgery to correct the problem depending on what is found.

If Henry is weight-bearing on that leg, his energy level is high and he has good appetite you can try and rest him for a few days. Walk him on leash only and do not let him jump or run the stairs. If the swelling and pain is only due to muscle inflammation or mild sprain, everything should be back to normal in a few days time. However, if Henry looks in pain, doesn't want to eat or play, you should get him checked by your local vets sooner.

I really feel that Lexi needs to have a full veterinary exam to determine what has happened. From the pictures, one possibility is that she is adjusting how she sits to extend the injured leg out - if she is not putting any weight on that leg then she may have broken it, or injured a ligament. There are also a couple of illnesses that can occur in a young growing dog, thses can be diagnosed with an exam and xrays. If she is limping she should have pain relief - Do not use any human medicines as these may be toxic to her.

I recommend resting him for the next 48 hours. No running, jumping, or playing. Take him out to toilet on a leash, and bring him right back in when he's done. If he still appears painful after this time, then I would take him into the vet for an exam. The vet can diagnose where the pain is coming from, and can dictate a treatment plan for it. He may also benefit from some pain medications, which the vet can prescribe. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. Poor Bowie. Pain medications can be prescribed by your vet, and may be indicated given that she is still limping. Icing is not typically recommended for chronic injuries. Continue to rest her as best you can and I think it would be a good idea to discuss pain medication with your vet. An x-ray may also be indicated to rule out a small fracture.
