My dog on ehrlichiosis meds has new red bumpy spots. What now?

What a beautiful girl! I'm not sure that the skin changes are related to the Ehrlichiosis, although sometimes you can see vasculitis. Occasionally low platelets (clotting cells) can also cause bruising that might look like dark spots. I'm assuming your vet saw her skin changes when she was diagnosed, but if not I'd recommend scheduling a recheck to make sure the skin is related. Otherwise successful recovery is mainly judged on clinical signs - as long as she's feeling good and her labs are normal nothing else is usually recommended. We usually don't recheck a test since many tests can remain positive for a long time following succesful treatment.

There can be many causes of a bloody nose in a dog including infection (viral, bacterial, fungal), neoplasia, trauma, etc. If you suspect Ente has Ehrlichiosis he should see a veterinarian to be examined, have a blood test to confirm that he has it, and then be put on antibiotics. Ehrlichiosis is a bacterium that is transferred via tick bites and there is no other treatment other than antibiotics. The diagnosis needs to be confirmed so that he is put on appropriate antibiotics and because it needs to be established that this is the cause of his bloody nose.

Hello and thank you for your post! I am sorry to hear that Spock has ehrlichia. This disease is treatable and can be cured. However, you should know that the test most veterinary clinics use is a snap test to detect antibodies against ehrlichia. If you are going back in 3 weeks to have this same test performed, Spock will likely continue to show a positive result. This is because his body has made antibodies against ehrlichia. If he had a previous infection and ehrlichia is not causing any of these symptoms, he will still show positive on this SNAP test so if you are going in to have the same SNAP test performed I would have your veterinarian send out a tick fever PCR test to the laboratory. This will detect DNA to ehrlichia and not antibodies. If Spock is positive on the PCR, it means that he has a current active infection. If you do not know if Spock has ever had your licio previously, I would still treat this with Doxycycline for 4 to 6 weeks total treatment time. This appears to be urticaria, which simply means that they are round, red, not raised lesions due to some sort of reaction. This often happens with insect bites and stings, but could be caused by other environmental factors. It's good that they are not bothering Ellie and are not something that needs to be seen by a vet right away. It's best to just monitor her for the next week and see if these lesions get bigger, or multiply. They will likely fade and disappear after a week, but if they seem to be getting worse, then it's best to schedule a time to visit the nearest vet, because these can be due to an infection, or autoimmune disease in rare cases. Yes, that is basically all you can do now other than only leash walking so she does not get too excited and gets her blood pressure up and gets another nose bleed. While it looks like a lot of blood is lost, there is not and your dog will be fine. Just make sure she takes her doxycycline (or other medication prescribed) for the prescribed period and she should be fine.

Skin lesions like Coco has can be caused by bacterial, parasitic or fungal infection, dietary or environmental allergies or sensitivities, immune system disorders, an insect bite like you mentioned, or a combination of the above. I recommend making an appointment to have Coco seen by your veterinarian to help determine the cause of the lesion you’ve noticed and to make sure it is treated appropriately. The vet will likely want to look at a sample from the area under the microscope to determine if there is an infection and to figure out what medication is appropriate for treatment. In the meantime, you can bathe Coco in hypoallergenic shampoo for dogs to clean the area, but this will likely not resolve the lesion.I recommend getting Coco on parasite prevention year round. I agree that these have a "bullseye" look to them, however we don't typically see bullseye lesions in dogs with tick disease, as they do in people (with Lyme disease). Often insect bites can leave this type of lesion, and I'd be wondering whether this was itchy or not, as it could be a mosquito bite or spider bite. Other things to consider would be ringworm and a bacterial skin infection (pyoderma). If Pepe is feeling well that makes me less concerned for tick disease, however based on your zip code Lyme is always a concern, so I would be inclined to get him tested for tick disease as you have found them on him recently.
