My dog eats well but isn't gaining weight & has ear hair loss?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Part of her not gaining weight could be due to an intestinal malabsorption issue. Your veterinarian could consider further advanced diagnostics like an abdominal ultrasound and a GI panel to check for something like that. I do suspect that her skin issues are possibly due to allergies and that probably plays a role in her quality of life. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing her allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

In terms of the weight loss, if he is doing well otherwise, this may be related to the diet fed which sometimes is not the appropriate for one specific dog. If he is a very active dog he may require a diet specific for active dogs such as Purina Pro Plan sports performance. Also, it may the amount of food that is being fed. Have your veterinarian calculate the amount of food he needs based on his most current weight, neuter status and also activity level. This is easily calculated based on the resting energy requirements which is an easy calculation. The ear issue is likely due to an ear infection. I recommend that you have Sparky evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Your veterinarian would be able to check what type of infection is present and treat accordingly. Weight loss can be a sign of intestinal worms, organ dysfunction or disease (pancreatic insufficiency, liver shunts, kidney disease, liver inflammation/infection, etc.), food allergies or poor diet, and many other conditions. Hair loss can be due to parasites (mange, fleas, etc.), hypothyroidism, allergies (food or environment), immune diseases, etc. Given that Kalu is 2 years old, I would start by getting him dewormed and also get a product that treats for fleas, ticks and mange. See if his problems resolve. If they do not, then see your vet about testing. Best of luck with Kalu!

There could be a few reasons why Bella is not gaining weight. I would recommend checking a stool sample to make sure there are no intestinal parasites since if she does have them this could be a reason why she isn't gaining weight. I would also recommend talking to your veterinarian about Bella's diet and exactly what she is eating. He definitely looks very thin. The biggest concern with a dog that eats well, but doesn't gain weight is that he has a disease or heavy parasite burden. There are some inherited diseases like liver shunts that can cause them to be unthrifty like this and there are some acquired infections like Babesiosis that can also cause them to look like this. The only way to know is to have him evaluated by a veterinarian. I recommend taking him soon, because he doesn't look like he has much left to lose. It's also good to bring a stool sample to the vet, so they can check for worms. I hope that helps and Wekko gets better soon.

Weight loss can also be caused by conditions such as IBD, diabetes, or be a normal part of the aging process. I recommend having Milo seen by a vet for blood work and x-rays to check if he has any masses and make sure his organs are functioning normally. I hope all is well with Milo!

It would be hard to say without an exam. My first guess would be to parasites, but if she's been dewormed recently, that may be ruled out. It wouldn't hurt to have another fecal exam done just in case, as well as bloodwork to check for any health issues such as metabolic problems, illnesses, ingredient allergies, etc that may be causing the weight loss. Your vet can also perform a body condition score along with tracking Boots' weight to see if she is too skinny, or still at the correct size for her body type.
