My dog eats her own poop sometimes. Is this behavior normal?

Hello,I want to ask a question. My god in one period eats her own poop,and after a mounth it stops so I was wondering what is wrong?

Dogs will often do coprophagia (eating poop) and other than it being gross, it is not really that big of deal and it does not necessarily mean there is something wrong. It could mean there is an issue, of course, but not necessarily.

There is some speculation that this could be due to a nutritional deficiency but there is so scientific evidence to back it up. There is also speculation that it could be due to internal parasites.

My suggestion would be to have her to your vet so they can do a fecal test to rule out parasites and deworm her if needed. I would also put Dora on a multivitamin made for dogs.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sometimes dogs can eat their own stools for different reasons. Sometimes it is purely behavioral and this behavior can be corrected. In other instances it may be because of a medical reason such as parasites, lack of nutrients and in most cases because of a stress factor. It would be recommended to check for any possible stress at home such as something new (perhaps new construction). If that is not the case, you can consider switching her diet. If that does not improve this issue, have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck!

Bad breath can indicate dental disease or it could be the anal glands if she is licking her rectum a lot. This could also indicate a problem. I recommend to play it safe and have your pup examined by the veterinarian. Best of luck.

Unfortunately most of the time when a dog is eating it's own feces, it's just because they've developed the habit and decide that they like it. Obviously it's a pretty gross thing to do and can lead to reinfection with GI parasites so it's a behavior we want to try to stop. First you should do regular and immediate removal of feces in the yard so Delilah has less of a chance to get to the poop. You can also try feeding something like Forbid (a product you can purchase) or a small amount of pineapple juice mixed in with her food. This will sometimes stop a dog from eating their own feces. Very rarely this behavior can be a sign of a nutritional deficiency so if it continues have Delilah evaluated by your veterinarian. My dogs eat poop on a diet. Do they need vitamins or more food?

Please remember that sometimes this is behavioral in nature. You can consider adding a multi-vitamin to their daily regimen. You may find these online or at your local pet store. There is nothing "wrong" with Maria's dining habits--we humans find it gross, but dogs look upon their piles as gourmet meals! Maria is far from alone in this behavior. The best way to stop the habit is to clean up after her immediately, every time she goes. You can also try sprinkling nasty-tasting stuff on it, like hot sauce, vinegar, or pepper. There is a product called Forbid (ask your vet for it), which you add to her food to make the delicacy less appealing. But chances are that as soon as you stop the poop-altering or the Forbid, she'll go right back to her "treats."

My dog eats poop. Is she vitamin deficient and how can I stop it?

It could be Luella Rose is suffering from a nutritional deficiency, she could have intestinal worms, or it may be she simply likes the taste. Make sure you are feeding her a high quality dog food like Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, or Iams. Also make sure her deworming treatments are up to date.
