My dogs eat poop on a diet. Do they need vitamins or more food?

It could be Luella Rose is suffering from a nutritional deficiency, she could have intestinal worms, or it may be she simply likes the taste. Make sure you are feeding her a high quality dog food like Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, or Iams. Also make sure her deworming treatments are up to date. Actually, most dogs that eat plants, grass or dirt do not do it because of a lack of minerals, vitamins or any other essential ingredients. With that in mind, while vitamins are not going to hurt, he may not really need them. In most cases, we never find out why they eat plants. I encourage avoiding this behavior as sometimes they do this because the grass or plant has been sprayed with chemicals that sometimes have a smell/taste to them which is a reason why they may do it. I would discourage this behavior as much as possible and if he is already eating a complete and balanced diet, there is no need to add vitamins or minerals of any sort. I would also avoid Blu from eating this plant as sometimes it can actually have a toxic effect causing gastrointestinal upset including vomiting and diarrhea and can even be more toxic when large amounts are ingested. When an older dog is having a behavior change they should be checked out by your vet. Eating stools at this age is not normal and almost always has an underlying medical cause. Hi, thanks for using Petcoach. Unfortunately eating stool is a behavior problem without a simple answer. Cleaning up immediately after the dogs defecate and/or leash walking Dove may be the only viable way to prevent this. In some cases training along with deterrents such as Forbid may help, but preventing access to stool is the true solution. Dogs will often do coprophagia (eating poop) and other than it being gross, it is not really that big of deal and it does not necessarily mean there is something wrong. It could mean there is an issue, of course, but not necessarily. There is some speculation that this could be due to a nutritional deficiency but there is so scientific evidence to back it up. There is also speculation that it could be due to internal parasites. My suggestion would be to have her to your vet so they can do a fecal test to rule out parasites and deworm her if needed. This is a repeat question so I will copy and paste my previous response since you deemed it a helpful answer. Giving the pet 1 tsp of meat tenderizer in the food daily sometimes stops the pet from coprophgia (eating of ones own stool). You can also easily purchase Forbid online (i.e. Amazon). I am unsure if his stools are loose or normal, but if loose I would also recommend deworming him (i.e. Fenbendazole) for possible intestinal parasites. Pets that are underweight should be checked and treated for parasites as the first step. If parasites are not the cause then other possible causes are: exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, Addison's disease, and Vitamin B deficiency just to name a few. It is unfortunate that you don't have a vet available because none of those disorder would be able to be detected and treated without medical care. If you find yourself at a dead end and nothing is working and your pet is ill because of this continued issue, then perhaps flying your pet out for care elsewhere, or making a road trip to get your pet the care he needs, is the next best step.
