Why does my dog keep eating kitten food? Is it safe? How to stop?

No it is not dangerous for her health. You can feed them separately to where your kitten will not scavenge your older cat's food. She is taking the older cat's example in what is edible or not by copying her. This is normal. You can add a bit of your older cat's food in hers so she gets the taste. It is not a problem.

Hello and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Although it won't cause any major health concerns right away it is best to avoid letting Sparkles eat kitten food. Kitten food tends to be higher in fats and calories so it can cause an adult cat to gain weight quickly. In general canned cat food is considered much healthier for cats so perhaps you can entice Sparkles away from the kitten food by offering him canned food instead. You may try creating steps for the kittens to climb/jump in order to get to their food. If you cannot elevate the food dish to keep it out of reach of the dog. Keep the food in a room with a closed door that you will need to open to let the kittens in to eat. It is very difficult to train a dog not to eat other pet's food and the only way to do this is to provide constant supervision. Nothing! :) We recommend that kittens eat mostly kitten food instead of adult food because they have different nutritional requirements for their continued growth (higher fat and different mineral ratios). Adult cats are done growing and don't need those types of things in their food.

In fact, in households with one cat who has urinary problems and another who does not, I often recommend feeding the c/d to everyone anyway since I don't want the urinary cat to eat anyone else's food. (That being said, if urinary cat will stay our of Kaya's food, a kitten food IS more ideal for Kaya for the next couple months at least.) Best wishes to you and your kitties!

Bobby and Coco are adorable! I do recommend only feeding Bobby kitten food. This is a common problem where kittens will want the adult food. I would recommend once Coco is done with her food and she walks away to just pick it up. You are already feeding in different rooms so just by picking up the food should help. It is best to let the dog eat only dog food and the nutritional contents and vitamins are greatly different based on their needs. You can try to feed your cat up high, a counter or laundry room, to keep the dog from reaching it or getting to it. If the puppy gets cat food every now and then, it will not cause any harm, but it should not be its sole source of nutrition
