My dog always wants sweets. Can I give her sugary human treats?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! There is a chocolate coating but that volume of chocolate is not enough to be toxic to a mastiff. Even though a Toffee Pop isn't toxic for a dog it is sugary. Dogs shouldn't get sweet treats as they can get cavities just like people and they do not brush their teeth. It would be best to provide Big Foot more nutritious treats appropriate for dogs. Have a great day!

Angel should not be given chocolate or sweets as these can be toxic to dogs. A small amount of raw carrots, spinach, or celery can be given but I would avoid giving raw potatoes. The majority of Angel's food should be a well balanced dog food like Royal Canin, Purina One, or Hill's Science Diet. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Everything in moderation. Cats and dogs are actually lactose intolerant so you need to be careful to see if she gets an upset stomach. Maltitol is not toxic to dogs like some other artificial sweeteners (such as xylitol), but it can sometimes cause GI upset or diarrhea in some dogs. So if possible, it would be better to use a treat that doesn't contain any artificial sweeteners at all. Many dogs enjoy cooked carrots or green beans, or small pieces of chicken or roast beef as treats. If you do opt to give Pepper the cookies, I would limit it to a small amount very occasionally to minimize the risk of upsetting her stomach.

If the majority of your pups diet is a good quality puppy food ( at least 80% ), then you can supplement with the sweet potatoes, vegetables (?), & only a very small amount of pumpkin. Pumpkin has a lot of fiber, so restrict this so as not to cause a loose stool. Also, make sure it is canned, or cooked pumpkin, & not pumpkin pie filling. Take care.
