How to keep water out of my dog's ears and when is water too cold?

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Male | neutered | 6 years and 8 months old | 16 lbs

My dog LOVES to swim but he always gets water in his ears. I clean his ears good when hes done. But,I know it's not good for him. Any recommendations to keep the water out of his ears when he's swimming? Also how cold is too cold for him to get in the water? Thanks

You can put a cotton ball down in the ears and this can help to keep some water out but you must remember to retrieve the cotton ball afterwards and realize that some water will still get in the ears. Your veterinarian carries cleaning solutions that can help to dry out any water that gets in the ear canal and it’s a good idea to use this after swim. Oscar is a little dog and so he loses body heat faster than a bigger dog. Dogs often don’t care about water temperature but if it is cold outside (low 70’s or below), I do not advise to let Oscar get in the water. Yes, moisture can promote bacterial or fungal overgrowth in a dark, warm ear canal. To prevent this, place cotton balls in the ears before the bath. Don't forget to remove them afterwards. You can also use a cotton ball in the ear canal while tipping his head down to drain excess water. There are drying agents you can purchase from your veterinarian or a pet store as well. Isis should be examined by your veterinarian to confirm and treat any existing infection. A swab of the ear can be examined in the clinic and medication can be dispensed based on the diagnosis.

My dog swims daily; is cold ocean water safe for his health?

If your dog is healthy and fit you can take him for a swim even in colder days. If Spot is suffering from arthritis he may get a flare-up of painful joint(s), so it would be better to avoid getting wet. Finally, if he is Labrador or Golden Retriever he may get a condition called 'swimmers tail' which is a very painful condition of the tail. In general, I would recommdend to dry-towel Spot if you do take him for a swim in cold days.

I am sorry to hear about your concern for your cat! You can try using some cotton balls or cotton rounds and placing them into the ears to absorb any excess water. Do not place anything down into the inside of the ear, such as a qtip, as this can cause more problems. In most cases, a little water in the ears will not cause an issue but occasionally may result in an ear infection from the increased moisture. You can pick up an ear cleaner at your vet or the pet store which have chemical properties that dry out the ear if she still seems to be shaking her ears tomorrow.

It is true that getting water in Oliver's ears does increase the risk of an ear infection, and it is very important that you dry his ears thoroughly. If he gave a good shake after the bath and you dried the inside of his ears with the towel, it's likely he got all of the water out.
