My dog's ear is red with gunk. Can I flush it before the vet?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 15 lbs

I think Reggie has an ear infection. I rescued him a couple months ago. I’ve been cleaning his ear with saline solution like my told me to do to get all the gunky build up out three times a week. His ear has become red. He’s not scratching or acting like it’s bothering him. The gunk is mostly down in his ear where I can’t reach with a cotton ball. I don’t wanna stick a cotton swab down in his ear. Can I flush it? What can I do to help him get rid of the gunk until the offices open back up?

Fill Reggie's ear canal to over flowing and massage the base of the ear. Allow him to shake his head. I agree not to stick q-tips down in the ear where you can't see it. Just get out what you can with the cotton ball. This link will also help:

I recommend to call you vet and ask about when Reggie can be examined. The reddness is likely indicating an infection that needs medication. An untreated infection can get worse and spread to the inner ear and it can be painful as well.

I hope this helps!
