I'm pregnant. Are my dog's ear mites safe for me and my baby?

Congrats on the upcoming puppies! She could have a bacterial or yeast infection in her canal. She could also have ear irritation just from allergies and may not need that medicine. I would recommend to have your vet look at her ears to ensure her ear drums are intact as some ear meds can cause neurological problems if given when the ear drum isn't intact. Your vet will also be able to determine the cause of the ear irritation. Take the ear drops with you and they will be able to tell you if they will be a good medicine for the infection if there is one present. I hope this helps!

I think the chances that the pregnancy will be affected by a single dose are unlikely. It may be best to stick with the ear cleaning solution until you can have Runtski examined by a vet to see if she needs the medications.

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Ear mites generally are noted first with signs of thick, dark discharge which appears a bit "crusty". However-the lack of these symptoms does not mean all is well with the ears of your pup. Dogs can get frequent ear infections, just like we can. I can tell from your photos that your pup has hair that grown down into the ear canals-this will be part of the problem. Those hairs trap debris, water from bathing, extra wax, etc and act as a great reservoir for bacteria to grow. I always recommend to my clients to have the hairs "plucked" by their groomer when they go or to come in to the office so that we can do it. After the hairs are cleared and the ears are cleaned, I like to do an exam of the ear canal and to take a swab of the ears to see what kind of yeast and/or bacteria are present there. It is important to have this exam performed by your vet to verify that your pet's eardrum is intact and not perforated. Likely your pet will get prescribed some antibiotics if your doctor finds it necessary, as well as pain medications or something for that awful itch. After everything is well controlled, it is usually easy to get my owners on a good ear cleaning regimen to keep ear infections at bay. I hope this helps! My best to you and your pup!

I would be more concerned that Myna has an ear infection not just ear mites. Ear mites are not that common in dogs, although can happen. I recommend taking Myna to a veterinarian and letting them check her ears to see if there is an infection. If they are concerned about ear mites they can check under the microscope for them. This amount of "dirt" on the external part of the ear i would considered normal, ear mites tend to be darker, like ground coffee, but in some cases it's not possible to actually see it from outside, the vet needs to check it with a cotton bud and under the microscope to confirm what it is. there 3 types of ear infections in dogs: yeast, bacterias and mites (less common). if Wallace seems to scratch his ears or shakes his head then it would be a good idea to get it checked by your vet.

Hello, first of all it is by no mean life threatening, but it needs to be treated nevertheless. if you saw one earmite under the microscope, this means there are probably thousands of them in the ears.

Unfortunately, ear mites are treated with a prescription from your vet, and your vet will need to confirm mites by looking at the ears under a scope. If you can't get to your vet, seeing if one does house call services, or getting a friend to give you a ride is best. Ear mites can be transmitted back and forth between pets as well, so if you have more that one pet, treating everyone at once can help ensure they are taken care of. Keeping the ears clean and dry and preventing Daisy from scratching at them can also help until you can get to your vet.
