Is it okay for my dog with an ear infection to sleep with a cone on?

It is not a good idea to try and apply ear mediccine while she is asleep. I suggest you ask your vet whether a differen medication such as Osurnia, which can be applied in the vet's office once and is good for 7 days is not an alternative to struggling with your dog. If not, you may need to put a muzzle on your dog every time you intend to apply the medication.

Most ear ointments are a little oily or thick in order to stay in contact with the skin inside the ear canal as long as possible, so it is absolutely normal to feel the ointment in the ear later on. I usually recommend a cleaning solution along with ointment, and you can ask your vet if there is a cleaning solution that they recommend to use to clear out the remaining ointment before applying the next dose. I also would get an E-collar (or "cone") for Norman to prevent him from scratching his ear so that he doesn't cause any additional trauma. You should definitely continue to ointment to continue treating the infection, stopping could make the infection worse and more difficult to treat in the future.

Poor Luna! Taking her into the vet on Monday is exactly the right thing to do. You can use a cloth to continue to try to wipe her ear but I would avoid making it damp as water could get into her ear That will make any ear infection worse. I would place an Ecollar on her to keep her from scratching at her ear, as that will cause trauma to the ear. You can make an Ecollar at home, and I will put a link below on how to do that. The point of the cone is to keep Tucker from licking. If you take it off, he will lick his wound over night. Do not take it off. He will get used to it and he will be able to sleep with it on. Tough Love does it here.

This is a good question, and a lot depends on how well behaved your dog is!! I typically recommend confinement in a kennel or small room for animals wearing a cone. This helps to minimize their movements and also limits the amount of mischief they can get up to while you are gone. He could knock lamps over, rip the cone on something or even get his head/cone stuck if he tries to go through an area that is too small (e.g. a dog door).

The cone should stay on unless Jazmin has trouble eating or drinking. If this happens, it can be removed for mealtimes but should be replaced immediately afterwards. If you see her having trouble on the stairs, carry her up or gently raise her head to clear the steps. She will acclimate to the collar in a day or two.
