Can my dog wear a cone safely while I'm at work and he's home alone?

I always recommend having them wear the cone for 12-14 days. It can take this long for skin to heal by scar tissue. I would recommend at least another 5 or 6 days before removing it. Hope that helps.

You can give her a Kong toy with treats in it that Kota has to get out, or you can get her a puzzle toy that she has to solve in order to get a treat. Both of those will help keep her occupied. I totally understand her hating the cone, but as you know, it's extremely important she keeps it in. It's not for too long (10-14 days), and then she will be free from it :-)

Yes, you can take his cone off while walking and feeding, however every time you take it off and put it back on he has to get used to it again. So he may be more stressed by taking the cone off and putting it back on than if you leave it on. I see that he has a lovely soft cone, so it is not really the rigid cone that gets bumped into everything. If he cannot eat with it on, you can feed him with his bowls elevated.

Hello! In all likelihood, Bruce is annoyed by the cone and not actually hurting. Make sure that you can fit two fingers snugly between the cone and his neck- this will ensure that it is not on too tightly. Many cones fit into collars, and this may make it more comfortable for him. If the cone is not on too tightly and there are no sharp edges poking into his skin, it should be comfortable. However, it is a strange and new experience for Bruce to have "tunnel vision" and he may bump the side of the cone into walls, tables, your shins, etc. :) Some dogs are okay with the cone when they are relaxing, but do much better at eating and toileting with the cone off. My own dog refuses to urinate if he is wearing a cone, so I take it off to walk him when he needs to wear one. If he is truly distressed about wearing the cone, you can call your vet and ask them for a mild anti-anxiety drug for him to take while he wears the cone and heals. I hope this is helpful! Yes. It's generally recommended to keep the cone on anytime you are not strictly watching her. She may need help accessing food and water or need it removed to eat. Make sure the ear infection is being treated as well. Just wearing the cone will prevent scratching but the infection needs to be medicated to resolve.

Please do not take Reddington's cone off at all. He likely will lick the stitches with it off when you are asleep, and that can cause serious post operative complications. It only has to be on for 10-14 days until he is fully healed, which is a relatively short amount of time. He will learn to live with it. I understand being concerned about him being in pain, but he will find his own position that is comfortable for him to sleep. I would leave it to him to decide which position feels the best since he can't tell you a specific position hurts or not.

The cone should stay on unless Jazmin has trouble eating or drinking. If this happens, it can be removed for mealtimes but should be replaced immediately afterwards. If you see her having trouble on the stairs, carry her up or gently raise her head to clear the steps. She will acclimate to the collar in a day or two.
