My dog has a growth on his ear. Is it a wart? How to identify?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | unneutered | 5 years and 1 month old | 80 lbs

My lab/ German Shepherd mix is a little over 5 years old. I have noticed a wart like growth that has been on his ear for a couple of months. Is there any way to tell what it is?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!

Thanks for the picture! Sadly a lot of skin masses can look the same but the picture resembles a sebaceous adenima which are benign. The only way to know for sure is to either remove it and send it for biopsy or try to do a fine needle aspirate in it.

I hope this helps and have a great night!

This appears from the photo to be a skin growth called a sebaceous adenoma and is likely benign. It is always best to have your vet examine your dog to make sure that this is confirmed. There is no way to make this go away without surgical removal by your veterinarian. These little masses can sometimes be a nuisance as they can bleed and become infected but otherwise are not typically harmful.
