Dog bit on ear with dangling skin. Does he need immediate vet care?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Boots. I do recommend that she sees a veterinarian today. The ear wound needs to be thoroughly cleaned and and examined. She may need antibiotics or even surgery to help it heal. In the meantime, do not allow her to paw at it. Place an E-collar on her if needed to prevent any further self trauma. I believe that needs a stitch to close it. I'd take Dylan into a vet now to have this done. He will also need antibiotics to prevent infection (a dog's mouth has a lot of bacteria), which the vet can prescribe. I do not recommend trying to treat this yourself at home.

If the bump has been oozing puss and blood it is best to have your Vet re-evaluate it to either: 1) shave the fur, clean it and provide antibiotics or 2) discuss removing it since it has changed and now may continue to be a source of irritation and infection for Cooper. It is possible that she caused it herself by scratching, but if you did not observe it happening, she could have traumatized it on something else, or been wounded by another animal. Based on your description of the wound, I recommend bringing her to your local veterinarian to have her evaluated. At the very least, the wound likely needs to be cleaned and flushed with a sterile solution to prevent infection. Depending on how deep or infected the wound is, it may require more extensive management such as surgical closure of the wound, or bandages. Willow likely also needs an Elizabethan (cone) collar to prevent her from further traumatizing the wound. Unfortunately, dogs like to scratch at their ears and can make it very hard for wounds to heal. If the wound is superficial and Willow is otherwise healthy, you may be able to apply compression to the wound to get it to stop bleeding, and monitor it closely at home for signs of infection (redness, swelling, yellow-green discharge, foul odor). If you see any of these signs, Willow should definitely be evaluated by a veterinarian. Just a reminder, NEVER give dogs any pain medications that are intended for humans, as they can be lethally toxic to dogs. I hope this is helpful!

Hi and thanks for posting! Sometimes bite wounds can leave pockets in the skin making the wound worse than they appear initially. It would be a good idea for this to be evaluated by a veterinarian. Your veterinarian will asses the area for pockets in the skin and asses whether or not stitches are needed. It seems small enough for tissue glue to be used but the wound may need to be closed with a stitch or two. A lot of bacteria is intro introduced into the skin and surrounding tissue during a bite. Brisquette may need systemic antibiotics as well to help lessen the chance of developing an infection. I hope this helps and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!

Poor guy. Unfortunately it sounds like Cooper has an ear infection that will require a vet visit, especially if he won't let you touch his ear. The vet can prescribe some pain medication (if requested) to help calm him enough where it will allow you treat his ears at home. The vet also has to prescribe some ear medication and cleaner once they test his ears to determine what kind of infection is present. Most ear infections respond well to treatment within 7 days. I would recommend just leaving them be for now, until you can get Cooper in to the vet. I wish you all the best with your pet Cooper and I hope that his ear infections resolves soon! Take care.
