My puppy has a tick. Is dry shampoo effective for tick prevention?

I would be concerned the baking soda would dry the skin out and cause irritation. Unfortunately a homemade shampoo like this is unlikely to kill fleas. It may slow them down while they are wet and allow you to pick them off, but it will not kill them. There is not an effective "natural" flea killing product unfortunately, as fleas are very hardy. A shampoo will also only be effective at killing the fleas on your pet at that moment and will not prevent more fleas from the environment from infesting your pet. I would recommend talking to your vet about the flea prevention options available at their office. There are a variety of very effective products now available including topical products like Advantage, oral products like Nexgard and Bravecto, and some effective long lasting collars such as the Seresto collar. The best way to get rid of ticks would be to use an oral tick preventive like Nexgard or Simparica. You give him a tablet and the ticks will die. If you use it every month, it will prevent the vast majority of ticks from attaching to Oli. If you cannot get one of these products, wash him in a flea and tick shampoo. Make sure to read the directions carefully as it often requires you to leave the shampoo in contact with the skin for 10 minutes or so. Each product is different and will tell you the appropriate directions. Brushing him will also help. In some parts of the world, ticks can transmit diseases. It really depends on what he has. Lice and ticks are very different things. I would recommend starting with an oral flea/tick preventive (which you'll need to get from his vet) and a good bath with general dog shampoo. Actually, given his tender age, starting with a vet visit would be best so they can treat him appropriately from the get go.

I am sorry that your pet is having sore skin due to ticks. You really should invest in a good tick preventative such as Bravecto, Nexgard, Seresto collar or the Preventic collar. This will prevent you from having to bath daily, which causes more skin irritation. The best thing for skin irritation is not oils (which often just get licked off and can cause GI upset if ingested), but instead a calming oatmeal based shampoo or hypoallergenic shampoo (i.e. Duoxo calming shampoo). Also daily fish oils is a natural anti-inflammatory that can help also. Try to limit his baths from now on to once every 2-3 weeks, especially if you are giving him a good high quality tick preventative. Also tick removal does not require a bath, but instead just removal of the entire tick with tweezers, making sure to remove the entire head to help avoid transmission of disease.

Poor Floyd! Frontline usually needs to be reapplied every 4 weeks which may be why it wasn’t working well. I would just do a regular bath as a lot of the tick “dips” can cause dogs to have reactions. Or you can talk to your vet about a dip that may be safer than the OTC products. If you just choose to do a regular bath then I would just look him over really well while he is wet. I would then reapply frontline no earlier than 48 hours after the bath. Once frontline is applied, you are not suppose to bathe them again for another 48 hours after. I hope this helps!

Flea and tick shampoos are only a quick fix. They will not continue to repel or kill fleas. They are not recommended - any brand. The Antiparasitic/Antiseborrheic shampoo does not have the active ingredients that the Duoxo has. I'm not saying it won't work (it might) but I am not familiar with it.
