My dog's dry heaving improved with meds. What tests should I do?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Female | 10 years and 9 months old | 59 lbs

My dog has been dry heaving constantly for 15mins I called the vet he prescribed one pill of nexium 40mg and one pill of primperan 10mg after she took the pills she stopped and looked more relaxed but I noticed she is still swallowing once in a while but not too much before the pills. She has No bloating. Is there any test I should do for her tomorrow to make sure she is OK? We don't have urgent vet numbers in my country.

Hello. If the Nexium & Primperan seemed to work & Moka is much more comfortable, she probably had some gastric reflux from something she ate. But she is an older Golden, so doing a geriatric workup on her would not be a bad idea. Blood work & a urinalysis would be baseline & show if there is anything to be concerned about. Until you have her seen, you might feed her lightly & with a bland diet using things like plain boiled chicken & rice, or even some low fat cottage cheese. Hopefully, all will be OK. Thanks for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
