Is dry food bad if wheat, corn, or rice are first ingredients?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would avoid the foods with a lot of dyes, like in Beneful. Royal Canin is an excellent food and wheat, corn, and rice grain are not bad ingredients. I would stick with Royal Canin. Good luck and kisses to Soska!

Again, there is no known problem with these ingredients. The stigma about byproducts is especially annoying, because byproducts like liver, kidney and other organs have great nutritional value compared with meat. The reason behind the stigma is not easy to understand. It really has to do with a series of non- professionals speculating on unsupported theories and then spreading the information as if it's truth. The same happens with people...just look at all the fad diets that come and go. While there may be some shred of evidence that these ingredients may have potential to cause harm, there is not nearly enough for a professional to say that they are bad and other ingredients are good. You can see that the pet food industry has responded to the unsupported claims of grains, natural ingredients, byproducts and even raw food, but please don't take that as confirmation that these ingredients are bad or good. It's nothing more than sales strategy and responding to consumer demands. This is not a good quality food, i would recommend trying to look for a food with better ingredients meaning more quality meat and less corn. some examples include- Orijen, Acana and taste of the wild. Royal canin is also a decent option.

In my opinion (and most veterinary nutritionists who have years of additional training), there is nothing to be concerned about with these ingredients unless your cats have been diagnosed with a food allergy or intolerance. Corn, wheat and soy can provide important nutrients for cats. Royal Canin makes quality adult cat food as well, so you could transition to this. I also think Purina ProPlan dry is a good quality food as well. If you would prefer a food without wheat, corn or soy I would recommend talking to your veterinarian to see what food they would recommend.

A good quality adult food is well balanced and has an animal based protein listed as the first ingredient (not corn or refined grains). There are some non GMO pet foods out there but have not really been shown to be truly any better than GMO products. Gluten free food would be something to look for certainly if your dog is allergic to gluten or grains but is really no better than foods that do contain gluten. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is not known at this time if grain free diets are actually better than diets with grain. I usually recommend feeding a high quality diet. Purina is an excellent diet but if you do not have access to this diet, there are others that you could consider that are also excellent such as Hill's Science Diet, Royal canin and Iams foods. Grain does not necessarily make dogs gain weight so I would be more focused on the quality and balance of the diet per se. Good luck and have a great day!

Some feel that canned cat food is more ideal due to the extra moisture content and because cats are more carnivorous than dogs. Canned food is best for cats with underlying urinary issues. With that being said if Noushmc prefers dry then that is what you should offer her. I wouldn't be concerned. Have a good day!
