Why is my dog's eye area dry and flaky? It's slowly spreading.

This is most likely a skin infection from the skin being moist all the time and unable to dry out. I would try using some medicated wipes twice a day in that area. I like dechra's miconahex wipes. This will help to dry the area out and get rid of the bacteria. If it isn't improving, I would have your vet take a look at him. He may need some oral antibiotics and a low dose of steroids to help clear it up. I hope this helps!

This looks to me like a demodex mite infection which can happen in puppies and may clear on its own but if Mia is an adult, this will need to be treated by a veterinarian. Demodex mites are normally kept in check by the immune system but if the immune system is not functing as it should for whatever reason, the demodex mites can take over and cause hair loss around the eyes, head, and limbs. Demodex mites can be diagnosed by a veterinarian through a skin scraping. Mia will need a special medication for this in order to resolve the infection. Those spots on Mala could be several things including allergies to fleas, allergies to something in the environment, food allergy or endocrine disease. Each one of these problems is detected and addressed differently and I recommend to discuss with your veterinarian which one to start hunting down first. Parasites are often ruled out with an oral medication like Simparica. Food allergy is best ruled out with a diet trial using a hydrolyzed protein. Endocrine diseases are detected with blood work. Environmental allergies are a little more difficult to detect but a response to therapy or a blood test can give an indication. Once you figure out and address the underlying cause, the lesions should not come back. There are a couple things you can do at home and they can help but they may not address the underlying cause. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin health. You may also try changing her diet to something like Royal Canin or Nutro as they are aimed at skin health. Also protect the area from trauma by having Mala wear an elizabethan collar at all times. You can cleanse the lesions once a day with a medicated pet wipe or hypoallergenic baby wipe be very careful not to get any liquid in her eye or nostril. Once the area is dry, you can apply a tiny dab of topical antibiotic and rub it in well. Do this twice a day. Again, do not get this is her eye or nose. Also protect the area from trauma by having your pup wear an elizabethan collar at all times. Keep her indoors, keep her clean and dry and try not to let her get hot. I would recommend Diamond get a skin scraping and fungal culture from her veterinarian to rule out demodex mites as a cause and a fungal infection such as ringworm. Both can be treated with medications when diagnosed. Of course, it could be due to another cause such as allergies, but I would start with a skin scrape and culture first.
