My dog drinks a lot, has accidents, and drools. Is she sick?

Drooling can be a sign of nausea and this with a decreased activity level can be observed with many conditions such as gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, kidney disease, pancreatitis, among many other possibilities. I recommend that you have Rufus evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for these possibilities and others depending on the findings on exam. Poor guy and sorry to hear about your mom passing. The weight loss was good for him and his health: however, his symptoms of increased drinking, urination and loose stool with accidents in the home are suggestive of possible diabetes or a urinary tract infection. His behavioral changes indicate he doesn’t feel well. I would highly recommend taking him to your vet for bloodwork and a urinalysis to check things over. She will likely need to have blood and urine testing. She could have diabetes, kidney disease, liver disease or an adrenal gland disorder or even cancer. It sounds like Lucky is sick. Losing teeth indicates serious dental disease and this can lead to several other disease processes. Dental disease is often painful and could also be a reason he is not eating well in general although not eating is also a sign of many disease conditions. Additionally, drinking lots of water is concerning for something like kidney disease, diabetes, endocrine disease or an infection. Urinating in the house can also be related to kidney disease, a bladder infection, diabetes or Cushing's Disease. Lucky needs to see his veterinarian very soon (ideally within the next few days) and the doctor will likely need to run bloodwork and a urinalysis to check for signs of disease or infection. The doctor can also discuss a dental cleaning and extractions of diseased teeth. It's always better to be safe than sorry. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions!

I would recommend having your dog seen as soon as possible if her symptoms are not improving tomorrow, even if this means taking her in to another vet or an emergency vet. Diseases we worry about with these symptoms include Cushings Disease (where the adrenal glands produce too much steroids), diabetes, kidney disease and liver disease. Some of these conditions can worsen quickly and become life threatening so having her examined and having bloodwork and urinalysis done as soon as possible to determine the underlying cause is the safest way to proceed.

Nausea and diarrhea can occur secondary to conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, dietary indiscretion, parasites, among other possibilities. At the very least they can start her on medications to make her feel better and check her hydration status. In the meantime, keep water available at all times to try to prevent dehydration.
