My Shih Tzu is drinking and peeing a lot with black vulva gunk. Why?

My shitzu has a black sticky build up around her p.p that won't go away and won't clean up. She is also excessively thirsty and urinating constantly.

Poor Bella.

Excessive thirst and urination are usually signs of a medical issue. It could be anything from a urinary tract infection to organ issues or endocrine disease. The first step to getting to the bottom of this is bloodwork and evaluation of Bella's urine.

I think you mean she has black sticky build up around her vulva. If that's the case, it may indicate she has a skin infection or is licking excessively at her vulva for another reason.

I definitely recommend a vet visit for an exam and some lab work to determine what is causing these two issues because she is probably uncomfortable. In the mean time, make sure she has 24/7 access to drinking water and wipe her vulva gently with a lukewarm wash cloth after she comes inside.

Bella's behavior now could signify a UTI. Dogs who have a UTI often pee in the home and other inappropriate places. Blood can be microscopic if present in the urine during a UTI, so just because you don't see blood in her urine doesn't mean she does not have a UTI. I would have Bella seen by a vet immediately. She could be suffering from a pyometra, which would cause her to be lethargic, shiver from pain, have the brownish discharge, and drink and urinate a lot. A pyometra is fatal without treatment, so she should be seen by a vet now. A UTI or bladder stones are other differentials for her symptoms, but the risk is of a pyometra is high. The vet can do a physical exam, blood tests, urinalysis, and x-rays to diagnose what is causing her symptoms so she can be treated. If she does have a pyometra, spaying her is part of the recommended treatment. Please take her into a vet now.

Poor girl. It sounds like she may have a urinary tract infection, that is not affected her systemically. UTI's cause excessive drinking and urination, and often accidents in the home b/c it is hard for the pet to hold their bladder if the bladder is inflamed. I would highly recommend taking Lulu to your vet to have her urine checked. Bloodwork analysis may also be recommended to check her organ functions as well. In an eight year old unspayed dog, the symptoms you are describing may be consistent with pyometra, or an infection of the uterus. This is generally considered an emergency that should be addressed as soon as possible. The uterus fills up with pus and infectious material, and can ultimately result in a severe systemic infection. I recommend taking Bella in to the vet for an exam right away so they can determine if this is the issue. The best thing to do for her if it is, is removing her uterus and ovaries. Hello, Licking the vaginal area excessively could be a sign of a urinary tract infection or vaginitis. A dog urinating in their sleep could be a sign of a urinary tract infection or urinary incontinence. An infection, kidney disease, or an endocrine abnormality could change the appearance or smell of her urine. Many dogs urinate when they are excited and that part is totally normal. It can be a medical or behavioral problem for her. Females are more prone to urinary infections and a common sign is frequent urination. Sometimes it can contain blood. A simple urine sample can determine if this is the cause and make sure there are no sines or crystals also. A round of antibiotics can clear this and just because she has it now, does not mean it will be a chronic battle or problem It can also indicate a behavioral problem such as urinating out of excitement, fear Or anxiety. This can be harder to treat but generally improves once she is in a safe, comfortable environment.

My senior dog's vulva is black and licked by male dog. Is it serious?

Hi, she is probably suffering with incontinence, do you ever see any urine after she lies down or in the morning after her sleep ? I would also rule out a urinary tract infection with a simple urine test. The incontinence can be easily cured with some medications from your vet. Those areas around her vagina that have turned black are likely secondary to the incontinence and the care from your other dog. I don’t think you should worry about these signs before your holidays but the sooner you get her seen and started on the meds and the more comfortable she will be.
