My dog accidentally got double tramadol & amitriptyline. What now?

Pet's info: Dog | English Bulldog | Male | neutered | 10 years and 10 months old | 90 lbs

My 11 year old English Bulldog was accidentally fed and medicated. 2x in one hour. He was given 150 mg of tramadol total snd 50mg of amitriptyline - what should I do?

Alone, these drugs would not be too concerning for a 2x overdose, but the combination is more dangerous to overdose. The combination can cause significant problems with the neurotransmitters in the brain and lead to life-threatening heart problems, breathing problems and seizures. This is not a big overdose, so I can't say that these problems will occur, but it is definitely possible. For this reason, it's best to take him to a vet right away. The vet can take steps to keep the medication from being absorbed and give the necessary medication to keep Oscar safe from potential adverse effects.

We have all done this, so don't beat yourself up.
Tramadol has a fairly large dosage range, so Oscar may be more tired or lethargic with a double dose, but I would not expect any other problems with a double dose of Tramadol.
It looks like Oscar is on a lower dose of Amitriptyline, so even with a double dose he is still within a normal dosage range.
My only concern is that Tramadol and Amitripyline can interact with each other, so I would recommend contacting your veterinarian tomorrow for a recommendation on Oscar's medication dosing tomorrow in case they recommend a lower dose tomorrow.
If Oscar seems agitated, has diarrhea or develops any muscle tremors, I would have him evaluated right away.

He should be fine but all animals can have a different reaction to medications so just monitor him closely for the next 4-6 hours. Too much tramadol can cause sedation or agitation, wobbliness, disorientation, vomiting, tremors and possibly seizures. He ingested the very top end of the dosage he could have for his weight. I suspect he will just be very sleepy.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Gerson! I know you are worried but you did NOT overdose him. There is a wide dose range for tramadol of 4-10mg/kg. He is 10 kg so a whole 50 mg tablet is 5mg/kg. He is just sensitive to it. Tramadol is an opiod so he is, for a lack of a better word, a bit high. I, like your Vet, start lower at 2.5mg/kg which is the 1/4 tablet. I would watch him and in 4-8 hours he should be normal. Good luck!

My dog took an extra Tramadol dose. What overdose signs to watch for?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I doubt ChaCha will have any adverse effects because 4 tabs is only slightly higher than the maximum labeled dose for a dog her size. But if she does, you are most likely to see sedation. Less likely you may see dysphoria - dilated pupils, vocalizing (this is NOT pain- it’s basically being “high”), pacing, panting, or other somewhat abnormal behavior. My small dog ate amitriptyline and is shaking. What should I do?

I'm sorry to hear Holly ate something she shouldn't! It's good to know she is responsive. I would strongly recommend contacting the Pet Poison Helpline for further information about this medication and to determine if the amount she ingested is cause for concern. She is a very small little dog. If they advise that toxicity is possible at this dose they will provide you with a case number that you can give to your veterinarian. Your vet can then call the helpline themselves and they will be advised if any treatments and antidotes that need to be administered. Holly make need to stay in the hospital, and receive IV fluids and activated charcoal. Your vet may also recommend some baseline bloodwork and this may need to be monitored in the future.
