My dog accidentally took double Sentinel Spectrum. Is she okay?

Hello. I would not be concerned. All of these prodcts have been rigourously tested & significant overdoses are a routine part of this testing. Often, 5x the regular dose will be given for weeks & no adverse effects are noted. So a small onetime overdose that your little schnauzer got will not bother her one bit. This medication contains a combination of Spinosad and Milbemycin. Milbemycin can be used safely in dogs for heartworm prevention but has other uses as well, and can be given at a dose two to four times the normal dose that we use for heartworm prevention, so I would not worry at all about a higher then normal dose of that medication. Spinosad is used for flea prevention and is a relatively safe drug. The most common side effects seen with its use include a decreased appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy and rarely, in dogs with a low seizure threshold, possible seizures. Studies on research dogs showed no long term effects on dogs that were given TEN times the recommended dose. Side effects that were seen at that high dose included nausea, vomiting, a decrease in appetite and some diarrhea. She will probably be OK but all you can do at this stage is monitor her for any signs of toxicity. If any are noticed she needs to see a vet immediately.

Even though Sentinel spectrum is not licensed for cats, in this case there should be no problem with this medication and dosage as the ingredients (milbemycin oxime, lufenuron and praziquantel) each are licensed for cats. There is not enough of each in the 2-8lbs dog dosage to hurt your kitty. I suggest you hide the rest of the sentinel so Maurice does not find it. Praziquantel tends to sometimes make cats vomit, so this could happen within the next 30 minutes or so. This should not be a problem.

According to studies done by Zoetis who make Simparica, "In the overdose groups, transient and self-limiting neurological signs were observed in some animals: mild tremors at 3 times the maximum exposure dose and convulsions at 5 times the maximum exposure dose. No adverse reactions were observed in healthy Beagle puppies over 8 weeks of age when treated with 5 times the maximum dose repeated 6 times at intervals of 2-4 weeks. She should be fine!
