My dog had a vaccine reaction. Is her 2013 distemper shot still good?

Yes, there are some distemper/parvo vaccines that can safely be given every 3 years. Puppies though need a series of vaccines to help build their immune system. Adults that have previously had vaccines can receive this vaccine every 3 years IF that is the type of vaccine that was given. I would contact the vet where he received the last vaccine and ask them whether they give the 1 or 3 year distemper/parvo vaccine to just make sure. I hope this helps!

Even if she was not due for it this year, she will most likely be just fine and this is not necessarily a big concern. Some dog owners do opt to vaccinate on a more extended schedule, since there is evidence that the vaccines for distemper, parvo, etc. probably provide immunity for several years in most dogs after the initial series is finished. However, Tia may need vaccinations for other illnesses such as Bordetella (kennel cough), leptospirosis, etc. which do need to be given yearly. And of course, she needs a yearly wellness exam regardless to check for any problems :) I would recommend discussing this topic with your veterinarian to see what he/she suggests for Tia given her age and overall health status. You could also opt to have vaccine titers done to see if she has a protective level of antibody present, and make your decision based on that.

Most unvaccinated, adult dogs can receive a vaccination for distemper once they are, healthy, normal and not ill. She will need two vaccines given 3 weeks apart to set the proper immunity levels. Unless she has an ongoing chronic condition like an autoimmune condition or a blood borne parasite, most pets will not be immune compromised in general but I cannot answer that question for you without knowing her full history. I recommend to call the veterinarian who took care of Chutki last year and ask if she is immune compromised in anyway. Make sure to ask if it is safe to vaccinate her. Chutki's hair loss could be several things including allergies, endocrine disease, parasites, hormonal changes, poor diet or the normal twice yearly shedding of the coat. The only way to figure out the cause is to have her examined by your veterinarian. You can rule out parasites by using an oral medication like Simparica. There are a couple things you can do at home and they can help but they may not address the underlying cause. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin health. You may also try changing her diet to something like Royal Canin or Nutro as they are aimed at skin health. Having her spayed can also help to regulate her hormones. You are correct, the first rabies vaccine is only good for one year. After that, depending on where you live, the next rabies vaccine could be good for three years. Some cities/states still require the rabies vaccine to be given every year though so you need to check what the law is in your area. Your vet will know. All, that being said, with her rabies vaccine being overdue - you need to update it as soon as possible and it may only be marked good for one year because you are overdue. This is typically for rabies and distemper-parvo. But different counties/states may have their own rules regarding rabies as it is required by law. A titer for distemper-parvo can also be performed instead of just routine vaccination. Lepto and bordetella are based on the pets risk and not core vaccines.
