My dog's discharge changed on antibiotics. Is it a sign of recovery?

I am sorry to hear about Izzy. Some dogs can suffer from repeated vulvar/vaginal infection if they have what we call a “recessed vulva” where they have extra skin around the vulva creating an environment with excess moisture. I would ask your vet if they think Izzy has this. There is a surgery to correct this problem and many dogs do amazingly well after the surgery. If your vet does not think this is the issue the next step might be a bacterial culture because it is possible a resistant bacteria is present.

Hello, sorry to hear about Ashlee. If she is having worsening discharge, I would actually be concerned that her antibiotics are not working. If her signs do not improve then you should have her urine tested again by your veterinarian to determine if the antibiotic she is currently on is adequate for her infection. It would be best to have your vet recheck this. Pyo can be a concern at any age. Even if the dog hasn't had a heat before. They can also have very severe UTIs which can be resistant to certain types of antibiotics. It would be best to do a culture of the discharge to make sure the medication you are giving is working and that you know exactly what type of infection you are dealing with. This can be a fatal turn right on Rio Grande St. infection leading to sepsis turn left on superior and death if left untreated. While antibiotics can decrease signs It will typically not fully clear the infection, which will cotinue to recur and worsen. If Izzy has a foul smelling bloody discharge she needs to see a veterinarian as soon as possible.

A clear discharge now after a course of antibiotics is a sign that any bacteria that may have been present in the discharge before, have now been eliminated. There may still be a clear discharge for a few more days but then this should stop. Trust your vet,

If the discharge cleared while Zion was on antibiotics, then it's likely a bacterial infection of the sheath. Typically, skin infections and penile sheath infections clear faster with topical therapy as well as oral medicine - talk to your vet about using a diluted antibacterial flush to clean the area. If it doesn't clear up by that point then I would suggest having him re-checked and a sample of his urine being sent away for a culture and sensitivity in case the antibiotic is not the right one for the infection that Brownie has.
