My dog has diarrhea after new salmon food. Is it an allergy?

You can consider a sensitive stomach type diet which does not contain that protein to see if there is improvement. You could also try chicken as a main protein now in his next diet. It sounds as if Ali may be dealing with a dietary sensitivity / indiscretion from the food she is on. About 65% of the time in cases of vomiting / diarrhea in dogs that are otherwise acting normal, the diet is the cause or an imbalance of the normal bacteria in the intestines. I would recommend transitioning to a completely different food altogether such as Science Diet, Royal Canin, Purina One or Natural Balance and feed this new diet for at least 4-6 weeks. If the diarrhea does not resolve after trying 2 - 3 different foods, I would have Ali examined by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. Also, dogs don’t have grain allergies, they have allergies to the protein source in the food. So if she had a problem with chicken, you could try a beef or fish formula. However, those areas on her skin and the diarrhea don’t make me think allergy. I would take her to a vet for an exam to rule out other skin problems, like an infection, and discuss the diarrhea. Diarrhea from diet changes doesn’t usually last that long. They may want to check her stool for microscopic parasites, or check blood work for internal organ changes. Good luck and kisses to Ethel!

Diarrhea can be observed with conditions such as colitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, among many other possibilities. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Hi and thank you for your question! I would highly recommend a food trial be done with snowball or get her tested for food allergies. This way you know what exactly she is allergic to and can avoid whatever it is. It is possible she could have developed a chicken allergy, yes. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! How frustrating! I think that Nova is allergic to the dog food. I would change brands or meat protein. Animals can develop GI or skin allergies to their food at anytime. Be sure that you have had a fecal tested for parasites and he has been dewormed well. Since he is young parasites are high on the list and I still deworm them even if the stool sample is negative. I hope this helps!

Yes, food allergies can develop in some cases but I would be more suspicious of the quality of the new bag of dog food and I would advise deworming even though the two fecals were negative. Intestinal parasites can be hard to find and in my opinion deworming is an easy way to rule out parasite infection. I would take the bag of food back to where you bought it and tell them what is going on. They should give you a refund or a different bag of food to try. Good luck with Marley.
