Can a dog suddenly get diarrhea from a new bag of familiar food?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd | Male | neutered | 1 year and 4 months old

Over the past weeks my dog has had consistent diarrhea. I took him to the vet he vet did a fecal test twice (negative) and he seems normal otherwise. I realized the diarrhea started around the same time he started a new bag of the dry food he's had for months. I took him off the dry and gave him wet with pumpkin and it was back to normal for a while and I gave him mostly dry last night and the diarrhea was back. Could he all of a sudden develop an allergy to food he's had for most of his life?

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear about Marley. Yes, food allergies can develop in some cases but I would be more suspicious of the quality of the new bag of dog food and I would advise deworming even though the two fecals were negative. Intestinal parasites can be hard to find and in my opinion deworming is an easy way to rule out parasite infection. I would take the bag of food back to where you bought it and tell them what is going on. They should give you a refund or a different bag of food to try. Good luck with Marley. I hope he gets back to normal soon.
