My 15-year-old pug has diarrhea; rice/ProPectalin not helping.

You can continue with the ProPectalin, however that does not fight the cause of the diarrhea and only lessens the symptoms. Norik will need to finish his course of antibiotics and probiotics and if the condition does not resolve then he will need to go back to the vet for a more intensive work up of his gastro-intestinal problems. This may include examining his poop, possibly culturing it, x-rays to see whether there is a problem with his intestines, and possibly a biopsy. So, for now finish the medications, keep feeding the bland diet and then have your veterinarian reassess your dog.

As long as Hudson is eating, drinking and keeping it down you should monitor him at home and continue with Pro Pectalin. Offer him small meals every 3-4 hrs and provide plenty of water to drink. However, if he develops vomiting or if he starts passing blood in the diarrhoea you should take him to your local vets for an appointment.

These signs could be compatible with a colitis, which is an inflammation of the last part of the intestine, the colon, usually related to dietary indiscretion. As a first approach, I would suggest to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. A probiotic like pro-kolin can be added to the diet. I would definitely recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. Hello. I would recommend starting Finn on a good probiotic, as this is very important for returning the gut bacteria back to normal. FortiFlora is an excellent one & is available at PetCo. I would also start him on some Metamucil, 1/2 tablespoon twice a day. If diarrhea continues, please see your veterinarian as Finn may need either a stronger anti-diarrheal or he may need antibiotics at this point. Continue the chicken & rice ( should be 75% rice & 25% chicken ) for another couple of days. The diluted Pedialyte is an excellent idea. If the diarrhea has been going on more than 24 hours and Lj hasn't improved with bland food, probiotics, and Immodium, then it's time to see a vet. There are many possible causes of diarrhea: stress, dietary indiscretion, infection, parasites, and more serious issues such as inflammatory bowel disease, Addisons disease or cancerous changes. You've done a great job trying the simple initial interventions that can help - but if that didn't do the trick, then it's time to have Lj checked out. Hopefully it's still a simple cause that will respond to a course of medication, but sometimes further diagnostics or long-term therapy are necessary. Your vet will likely recommend starting with a fecal sample check to look for microscopic parasite eggs. Depending on exam findings, they may also recommend some initial screening bloodwork to evaluate general body function and help screen for some of the conditions that can be associated with diarrhea. Or, they may recommend an initial course of medication to see how Lj responds and go from there. Hope this helps!

Hi there. My first thought is that Pavi needs checked for internal parasites like coccidia that will change the color of their stool and cause then to strain. Second, feeding a good quality food for digestive health is key if your pup often has an upset tummy. Purina Pro Plan EN is a good one, or Hills Science Diet GI. Both are available in canned and dry foods. Some dogs do best when this is what they are fed exclusively. Another thing would be to have Pavi's anal glands checked so that this is not giving her any pain. Hope this helps!

I would recommend giving the food more time to help normalize the stool. You can also add in a probiotic such as Purina Fortiflora to see if this helps resolve the diarrhea as well.
