My puppy has watery diarrhea. Should I take him to the vet or continue Pro Pectalin?

Hello, and thank you for your question. I don't see a problem with administering a single dose of kaolin and pectin to Luca. In addition, I would offer him a bland, easily digestible diet in small, frequent portions, such as boiled ground beef and plain white rice. For his weight, 2 tbsp every 2-3 hours should work. If his diarrhea worsens or if he starts to have vomiting, reduced appetite or lethargy, he may need to see a vet before your travel tomorrow. I hope this helps, and that Luca feels better soon!

If Chaco is otherwise still active, playful, eating, drinking, and has not been vomiting, I think it is ok to just keep an eye on him for a couple more days. Offer a bland diet (such as plain cooked chicken and white rice) and monitor his appetite and activity level. If he hasn't been dewormed in the past 4 weeks, that would also be advisable. If his stools are not looking more normal in a few days, or if at any point he starts vomiting, acting like he doesn't feel good, or the stool becomes bloody, take him to your vet. You can continue with the ProPectalin, however that does not fight the cause of the diarrhea and only lessens the symptoms. Norik will need to finish his course of antibiotics and probiotics and if the condition does not resolve then he will need to go back to the vet for a more intensive work up of his gastro-intestinal problems. This may include examining his poop, possibly culturing it, x-rays to see whether there is a problem with his intestines, and possibly a biopsy. So, for now finish the medications, keep feeding the bland diet and then have your veterinarian reassess your dog.

You should put her on a bland diet (lean, cooked meat with some rice or pasta) for a few days. If she continues to pass diarrhea over the weekend, or if she becomes lethargic or starts to vomit, you should take her to your local vets or call your emergency service.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Harley! He is a young guy and I don't like young puppy's to be sick for that many days. I recommend you have him seen by your Vet today before we get deep in to the weekend. I would stop the yogurt since that seemed to have either worsen things or triggered the diarrhea. Most dogs and cats are actually lactose intolerant and dairy products can commonly trigger diarrhea. I would also consider getting him off the lactol. At 5 weeks he should be weaned and on puppy food. I would start mixing the lactol in to canned puppy food and see if that stars to improve his stool. When you take him to the Vet bring a stool sample to check for intestinal parasites. Good luck!

It always concerns me when young puppies get lethargic. Puppies are more susceptible to the effects of dehydration and hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) than adult dogs, so diarrhea is more serious for Wallace than it would be for an adult dog. If he's back to acting normally, eating, drinking, and doesn't have further diarrhea or vomiting, it's perfectly fine to continue monitoring him at home. However, if he remains lethargic, has more mucousy diarrhea, begins to vomit, or refuses to eat or drink normal amounts, then you should have him examined by his vet. Your vet will need to do a physical exam. Depending on their suspicions based on their exam findings, they may recommend some diagnostic testing or may opt to start him on some medications. Possible causes of this type of issue include stomach upset from a virus, intestinal parasites, among many other issues. If your vet finds that Wallace is dehydrated, they'll also be able to give him some fluids. I hope that he feels better soon!
