My dog has diarrhea, dry nose, warm ears, not eating. Vet or wait?

The diarrhea could be caused by any number of things; intestinal parasites, a bacterial infection, even being constipated will sometimes manifest as diarrhea because liquid feces is all that will get by the impacted fecal material. It could be as simple as a dietary indiscretion, meaning she might have gotten into the trash and eaten something that didn't agree with her. Try taking away all food, treats included, for 24 hours (only if she is an adult dog; puppies should never be fasted for more than 12 hours). She can still have water. This will give her gut a chance to rest. After the 24 hours are up, introduce just a small amount of her normal food. Wait a little while and give her a little more. Keep doing this until she has had her normal amount for the morning. However, if she continues to have loose stool, or starts vomiting, loses her appetite, acts lethargic, and/or develops a fever, get her in to be seen by your vet right away as this could indicate a more serious problem.

Poor Chula! It sounds like she is not feeling terrible. Any pet who is not eating beyond 48 hours needs to see the veterinarian. Just like people, there are many conditions that can make pets feel sick. This could range from bacterial over growth to intestinal blockage. Also like us, diseases are best addressed early and this may result in a better prognosis. I recommend to have her examined by the veterinarian today. The doctor will need to learn the underlying cause in order to give appropriate treatment. Bring in a stool sample in case the doctor needs to test it. I hope Chula starts feeling better quickly! Hi there! Sorry to hear that Reeses is not feeling well. The clinical signs you describe are concerning when they occur in a puppy as they can be seen with serious gastrointestinal infections such as Parvovirus. Other possibilities include intestinal worms and dietary indiscretion, among other possibilities. The sooner these conditions are treated the better the outcome tends to be. For this reason, I recommend that you have Reeses evaluated by your veterinarian to check for these possibilities and to start therapy based on findings. It appears that Bebe is having some form of gastrointestinal irritation. This can definitely make a dog feel nauseous and stop eating. Diarrhea is a common problem and is usually self-limiting (will go away on its own). It may not be serious right now, but it's always possible that it could be the start of something serious. If Bebe has any of the following, then she should see a vet: 1) Blood in diarrhea 2) Very watery diarrhea 3) Starts acting very depressed 4) Stops eating or drinking for longer than 24 hours. 5) Diarrhea lasts longer than three days. You can help her get through this by feeding bland food (boneless chicken and rice is good). Feed small portions three times a day. You can also add probiotics to the food (can get this at the pet store), which has demonstrated some efficacy for improving diarrhea. Ensure fresh, clean water is always available. I'm sorry to hear Breeze isn't feeling well. I wouldn't say it's an emergency but diarrhea is pretty uncomfortable and I recommend getting medication to remedy that. I would see if she would eat the boiled chicken and rice to help settle her stomach. I would also recommend blood work and X-rays to make sure there's not something else more serious going on in her intestinal tract. Good luck and kisses to Breeze!

Yes, any pet that has persistent signs especially vomiting and diarrhea should be evaluated immediately. Once dehydration and electrolyte imbalance develop, they will just continue to get weaker and weaker unless treated. Reasons for vomiting/diarrhea are many and range from intestinal problems or problems with other organs in the body causing the signs. Intestinal worms, dietary indiscretion (eating things she is not supposed to eat), dietary intolerance/sensitivity, a foreign body (especially in younger dogs), infection, inflammation, toxins, pancreatitis, kidney/liver problems, etc. Your vet can do a physical exam and some tests which could include a fecal exam, blood work, x-rays, ultrasound, etc. to try to determine what is causing the problem. Once a diagnosis is made they will advise a treatment plan to address the issue. Your vet can also address the itching of her muzzle and whining which may or may not be related. I hope this is just temporary and it resolves quickly for you and Moka.

Poor girl. I think at this point (>24 hrs of being ill) because she isn't getting any better you should consider taking her in to your vet. This may just still be a really upset stomach, but she needs to see your vet and have her vitals and physical exam done to determine if she should have further testing done to look for other possible causes (i.e. liver, kidney disease) for her illness.
