My dog gets diarrhea without rice. Is long-term rice feeding okay?

Food intolerances are not very common for dogs to get and it would be even more rare for rice to be the cause. Food intolerances are due to certain proteins which are usually animal proteins (beef, pork, dairy, etc.). To find the actual protein Max is allergic to, you would have to do an elimination trial. Make sure that there is no possibility of this happening - especially if there are kids in the house. As always, it's best to do these things in consultation with your vet. They can also ensure that nothing else is responsible for the diarrhea. It is definitely possible that the vomiting and diarrhea is due to a long-standing infection. If Max has any of the following, the he should see a vet as soon as possible: 1) Blood in diarrhea 2) Very watery diarrhea 3) Dog starts acting very depressed 4) Dog stops eating or drinking for longer than 24 hours. You can always check the caloric content on the rice you are feeding him in combination with the caloric content of his diet to make sure that he does not get over fed and gains weight as a result. Continue giving the rice and boiled chicken for the next 4-7 days and then slowly transition him back to his normal diet. You can also try adding in 1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) in to his food daily to see if this helps also. If he is still having diarrhea after 2-3 days, then it’s best to get Harley seen by your local vet for a proper exam, fecal exam (to check for intestinal parasites), and bloodwork should be considered if he hasn’t had any in the last 6 months to a year. Underlying liver disease and gallbladder disease can cause subtle signs like loose stool in pets, so it’s best to get things checked out if things don’t get better. If it is going to work, you should see improvement in stool quality within 24 hours. If you have not seen this, then he will need to see his veterinarian as he will likely need fecal testing and a medication. If he is otherwise acting like himself, it is generally safe to withhold food for 24 hours to rest the GI tract. This can help to resolve simple cases as well. If he is acting ill, vomiting or has blood in the stool, then he will need to be seen. I hope this information helps!

It is ok to stay on the Hill's diet long-term if that is all that Orcan needs to prevent diarrhea. If you want him on another diet, you can slowly mix the two over 3-4 weeks. The first week it would be 75% Hills and 25% RC. The next week 50/50, etc. If the diarrhea comes back you can try a different RC diet for sensitive stomachs, continue feeding just the Hill's, or discuss food allergies or other possible causes for diarrhea with your vet.

You should not give your puppy cow's milk as it makes diarrhea! Rice is also not a proper dog food. You need to feed your puppy proper complete commercial puppy food for large breeds. Stop the milk immediately, offer water. Get puppy food as described and replace part of the rice every day until you feed puppy food only.
