My dog has diarrhea and is lethargic, but still eating. What to do?

It always concerns me when young puppies get lethargic. Puppies are more susceptible to the effects of dehydration and hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) than adult dogs, so diarrhea is more serious for Wallace than it would be for an adult dog. If he's back to acting normally, eating, drinking, and doesn't have further diarrhea or vomiting, it's perfectly fine to continue monitoring him at home. However, if he remains lethargic, has more mucousy diarrhea, begins to vomit, or refuses to eat or drink normal amounts, then you should have him examined by his vet. Your vet will need to do a physical exam. Depending on their suspicions based on their exam findings, they may recommend some diagnostic testing or may opt to start him on some medications. Possible causes of this type of issue include stomach upset from a virus, intestinal parasites, among many other issues. If your vet finds that Wallace is dehydrated, they'll also be able to give him some fluids. I hope that he feels better soon!

Poor Penny. You're doing the right thing by first trying to fast her. Try adding in 1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin (not the filling) in her food once a day. If she is still having really loose stools by tomorrow, then she needs to see your vet. She may have a parasite problem or another internal illness (i.e. Pancreas, Liver disease, Gallbladder disease) that subsequently causes abnormal stools. The vet will know what to check and test for to determine the cause. I hope Penny gets better soon.

Poor Luna! She could have an infection (parvo, etc) or a parasite. Since she has bloody stool and is lethargic, she should be examined by a vet to determine the cause and treat. Your vet can test a stool sample to help diagnose and then prescribe medications to treat the problem. She might also need some fluids to prevent dehydration. Hope she gets better soon!

I recommend that you have Zekie evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. That's hard to know if she needs a veterinary visit. Certainly a visit could provide some medication which may slow down the diarrhea. Hello! Thank you for posting your question! If you haven't tried pepto bismol, you can give that a try and give Rosie 2tsp every 8hrs. I would also begin a bland diet such as boiled chicken breast and rice until the diarrhea resolves. You can also try and add a probiotic such as Fortiflora. I would not give the pepto bismol for more than 24 hours. If the diarrhea is worsening and not resolving, i would bring a stool sample to your vet to have it tested. There are other medications that your vet will habe to help resolve the diarrhea. If Rosie ate something she normally doesn't eat, this could have caused a dietary indiscretion. I would take Allie into the vet immediately This black diarrhea means there is bleeding in the upper intestinal tract, and this can be caused by eating something toxic, trauma to the GI tract, a foreign body, GI ulcers, or GI tumors among other causes. Bloody diarrhea can be very serious, especially if the dog has no energy, and this is not something that should be attempted to be treated at home. Allie needs veterinary care to determine what is causing this bleeding so she can be treated correctly. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies.
